Partnership Established in Bid for New York Racing
Mohegan Sun and Capital Play have joined forces to bid on the rights to run New York horse racing for the next 20 years.
The franchise would allow them to operate Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct race tracks.
"They're a fantastic partner, obviously a great success," said Karl O'Farrell, chief executive officer of Capital Play. "We're very pleased to have them as our partner. They have one of the best casino operations in the world."
The New York Racing Association has held the franchise since 1955 but many think that a change is in order. The team of Mohegan Sun and Capital Play would like to make the racetracks entertainment attractions as well as gambling operations. This would be achieved by building world class nightclubs and restaurants to accompany the various slot machine areas already in place.
Capital Play hopes to revive New York racing in the same way that it did Australian racing. "I think it's great because we both share the same vision as far as the entertainment aspect of this business," said Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive of Mohegan Sun.
Other bidders include Excelsior Racing Associates, Empire Racing and the NYRA - which is under new management. New York officials will announce the winners of the new contract before December 31st of this year.
