Tiz the Law, who drew away by three lengths from runner-up Ete Indien in the Holy Bull, left third-place Toledo chasing 14 1/2 lengths behind. It was a dominant showing that marked the colt’s first victory around two turns.
Looking back to his 2-year-old season, it was the sort of performance expected when Tiz the Law went into Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) a 2-for-2 winner of Belmont Park’s Champagne (G1).
“We felt we had the best horse after he won the Champagne the way he did,” Knowlton said. “He had a lot of things against him that day.”
Tiz the Law bobbled after the break, losing ground and getting boxed in most of the way over a sloppy track. On Saturday, jockey Manny Franco took a tight hold on the reins up the Gulfstream back stretch, moved Tiz the Law into the clear and let him roll.
Tagg called the race “perfect,” saying his instructions to Franco were to “stay off the rail no matter what you have to do. Lose the ground and go around them.’”
In the Holy Bull, Tiz the Law improved his record to 3-0-1 in four starts with earnings of $498,900. His 22 Derby qualifying points are tied with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero Storm the Court’s total atop the leaderboard.
