I bet NHL at Pinnacle for relatively small amounts (still working on a good positive model) and have started to notice a pattern with them.
Yesterday, at exactly 10:05:25pm EST (internet adjusted clock), I placed a bet on Edmonton ML (+182) and Under 5 (+137). I was shut out. The "Game No Longer Available" message came up so fast, it was scary. The National Anthem had not even started and the game was offline.
Although the posted start time is almost always 5 minutes after the hour, I am usually able to bet games up to 7-8 minutes after the hour.
I only started keeping track of the times for games that I have been shut out on since the middle of February. So far the games I have been shut out on are:
+111 (lost)
+117 (lost)
-122 (won)
+123 (won)
+157 (lost)
+140 (won)
+182 (won)
+137 (won)
In the above sample, the earliest I have been shut out is 3 minutes after the hour (2 minutes before posted start time) and 7 minutes and 20 seconds after the hour.
A couple of these are totals and the rest ML. Betting to win 1 unit on each of these would have given me 9.0266713 units won divided by 6.4192152 units bet for and ROI of +40.62%. Also, all of these games had more than the usual public percentage on them (I bet against high public percentages).
SportsInsights time stamps show that the Over dropped from -150 to -147 at 10:04:49 after sitting at -150 from the previous 40 minutes or so.
What I am wondering is if anyone managed to get a bet through Pinnacle on Edmonton ML or Calgary/Edmonton Under 5 after 10:05:25pm EST? Or on the other side of this game like Calgary or Over? Or at another book?
I am thinking about doing something and wondering if anyone has had any experience (either for positive/negative results or logistic problems) they would like to share. I was thinking of betting amounts at the last minute that would get the attention a book (say a nickel or dime) and then if shut out early, bet at another book that is still open if it is possible. I would not confirm the bets at the first book and would only test to see if they were still taking bets. My hunch is that in games with too much sharp play, Pinnacle (and others I suppose) only take bets on the wrong side at the last minute and shut the others out. I know this part of the post belongs in Handicapper Think Tank forum and my primary reason for posting is the above questions.
