resigned at 45 and still going strong
Pucks has to be one of the roughest sports out there going today, and yet we keep seeing more players continue to play in there mid-40's. Heres another prime example of this one.

he Red Wings re-signed 45-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios to a one-year contract Tuesday

The Red Wings re-signed 45-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios to a one-year contract Tuesday.

Chelios has played a key role for Detroit after Jiri Fischer was sidelined with a heart ailment during the 2005-06 season and Niklas Kronwall was injured last season. He is coming off his 23rd NHL season and his record 22nd postseason appearance.

The Red Wings were eliminated in six games from the Western Conference finals by the Anaheim Ducks, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

"He has taken conditioning to a new level and has set the standard for how today's professional athlete trains year-round in order to compete at an elite level," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said in a statement. "In addition to his high level of play, Chris' experience and leadership are second to none."

Yeah I guess it's one of the roughest but still it can't compare to football... I hate when people try and make the comparsion... Let's see what if an NFL team played 82 games in a year ? That's a career for most...

Signing Chelios is all fine and good in and of itself. However the Wings will continue to wallow in the playoffs if they insist on continually trotting out a 45 yr old (Chelios) a 38 yr old (Schneider) and a 37 yr old (Lidstrom) as 3 of their top 4 defenceman. Playoff series just wear down these types of players. You can carry one of them, probably even two of them, but you can't carry 3 of them out of your top 4 and expect success!
