Montreal Canadiens vs. New Jersey Devils // Feb 27

    Puck drop

The Montreal Canadiens (33-21-8) continue their two-game road trip tonight when they take on the New Jersey Devils (25-25-11). Both teams are in dire need of stringing some wins together. While the Habs want to hold onto their lead in the Atlantic Division and prove they aren’t collapsing, the Devils need to get their act together to even start thinking about the postseason.

The curious case of the Canadiens

For a team in first place in their division, the Habs sure do suck. In their last 10 games they are 3-6-1, which is the 27th in the league. Their power play percentage is 10 per cent (26th), they’ve scored 1.5 goals per game (30th) with a goal differential of -1.4 (30th), and their save percentage is .901 (22nd) . So, they really do suck!

The good news is that the team is convinced that they are turning things around after the All-Star break under new bench boss Claude Julien. Now if only their play would mirror their false confidence. Coming off a win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, maybe the Habs can turn things around. They are going for the season sweep against the Devils, having beaten them 5-2 and 3-1 already this season. Al Montoya will get the start tonight over Carey Price, he is 7-5-3 this season.

    Down in the dumps

The Eastern Conference race (especially that containing Atlantic Division teams) is heating up. Too bad the Devils aren’t one of them. They are eight points back of the Leafs who hold the final Wild Card spot, but there are five other teams in front of them also putting pressure on Toronto.

At home this season the Devils are 13-12-5 and they are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games. The Devils have always been a defence-first team, so it’s not surprising that they are 28th in the league in goals for with 2.3. It is disheartening that they can’t even play defence all that well. They are 20th in the league and give up and average of 2.9 goals per game.

    The Final Breakdown

The Habs have been very successful when facing the Devils on the road. They hold a 9-3 record in their last 12 and have outscored the Devils 36-24 in that span. Al Montoya hasn't been half bad as a backup this season and he'll look to get the Habs a second consecutive win in an game thats all too important for Les Canadiens.
