Last night, with the hometown NJ Devils leading the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in the third period of game seven, I was debating whether or not to place an in-play wager on the visitors with a little more than seventeen minutes remaining in regulation time. The odds at this particular time were 2200-1. As time continued to wind down until there was about twelve minutes to play, the Devils were called for a minor infraction and the odds fell to 1200-1. New Jersey succeeded in killing off the Carolina powerplay and with roughly ten minutes remaining, the odds shot back up to 1800-1 and that's when I made my decision to place my wager. The Canes, as most of us are aware now, fought back in the dying couple of minutes to tie the game and finally won it on Eric Staal's marker with thirty-two ticks left to eliminate the Devils from further competition and grant my wager what most of us call a 'lucky' winner.
