When should you start drafting pitchers?

Been doing alot of mock drafts lately mostly 10-12 teams and trying out different strategies. I don't like to draft pitchers early however in a 12 team league if I don't draft a pitcher by the 4th round I end up being very thin at pitcher as by the 5th round most of the top guys are already taken. If someone doesn't drop dramatically I don't draft a pitcher in the first 3 rounds as theirs always decent names out their. So when do you draft your first pitcher? How about closers how long do you wait for a top guy? Only name I would even consider drafting in the early rounds is Craig Kimbrel and even with him he must have dropped multiple spots.

In our league? Rounds 1-7 should be dedicated to pitchers

Same here. I'm not smart enough to stay away from them early.

I like one stud somewhere in the early rounds and then fill them up in middle rounds.

I actually have no problem with taking TWO pitchers in the first 5 rounds, provided they are upper tier. It's is easier to find offense cheap later than it is to find studly pitching.

agree 100% LT glad to hear u say that...in my league there are nicr bonuses for complete games and shutouts too...pitching can really help you...plus theres always someone who comes out of nowhere offensively look at trout last yr...melky cabrera...there are plenty of waiver wire gems

This is the best way to do it IMO. Then hope your stud isnt the 1-2 annually that goes down with an injury.

I also like to stock up in middle to late rounds.
I always carry more bench pitchers than position players.
As the season goes on- there is always some pitchers that you never expected to do well,,rise to the top......I love the waiver wire.

That's how I've always thought. Realized that I'm in the vast minority on this.

If you want to finish in the top 3 of the four starting pitching roto categories you need a stud SP in round 2/3 and a solid #2 in round 4/5.

I just did a draft and got Dickey and Medlen in the middle rounds. Don't waste a high pick on Verlander, King, or Kershaw. As someone above said pitchers are a dime a dozen

Actually it wasn't really that far off his other 2 good years.
He shouldn't be drafted in the first anyway.

Very true. Pitching is always at a premium. That goes for fantasy and real baseball
