- The Angels have placed shortstop Jose Iglesias on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, the team announced. Iglesias, whom the Angels acquired from the Orioles in the offseason, has batted .283/.317/.396 with four home runs and two stolen bases over 167 plate appearances. He hasn’t started since May 25, leaving shortstop to David Fletcher.
- The Astros have put catcher Jason Castro on the 10-day IL (retroactive to May 25) with left Achilles soreness and recalled backstop Garrett Stubbs, Mark Berman of Fox 26 tweets. Castro, who opened his career with the Astros from 2010-16, rejoined the team on a two-year, $7MM guarantee during the offseason. The deal looked good for the Astros before Castro’s IL placement, considering he has hit .271/.397/.479, though he has only taken 59 plate appearances while playing second fiddle to Martin Maldonado.
- The Indians sent outfielder Jordan Luplow to the IL on Friday with an ankle issue, according to the team. It’s a problem Luplow has been dealing with since spring training, and manager Terry Francona said the club is “trying to figure it out” (via the Associated Press). The 27-year-old Luplow is off to a .165/.325/.433 start with seven home runs in 121 plate appearances. Despite the low BA, Luplow’s production has been 13 percent better than average, according to FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric.
- The Giants will go three to four weeks without first baseman/outfielder Darin Ruf, Kerry Crowley of NBC Sports Bay Area tweets. Ruf went on the 10-day IL list on Thursday with a strained right hamstring, joining fellow first baseman Brandon Belt on the shelf. Both players have recorded well-above-average production this season, but the Giants will have to go without the pair for at least a couple weeks. They started LaMonte Wade Jr. at first base on Friday.

You're right they haven't really made a tweak this big since introducing the DH but to me this rule is terrible because it gives the home team an even bigger edge especially when they manage to pitch a scoreless top half of the inning. I just don't understand the need for the rule as I don't think it shortens the game any and basically what they're trying to do is avoid games that go forever because no one can score in extras.Comment -

Don't do it? Really? Cowboy should have been thrown out of the umpires union back then.
Fay Vincent also had a Steinbrenner vendetta, he hated Pete Rose.
Vincent to this date believes Rose was responsible for his buddy Giamatti's threat.
I'm not a big fan of the owner's group but they got it right with the overwhelming vote forcing him to resign.

I may not like the extra inning rule but it does generate added excitement to extra innings and give the game an added element of strategy for the managers. That San Diego game today was a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Back and forth until the Padres finally put a crooked number on the board to secure the victory.Comment -

I missed it. I've been involved in these NBA playoffs that have been nothing short of ordinary.
This breed of NBA blows 80 percent of the players stand around on defense and look for a rebound on a bricked three pointer.
Damn, wish I saw that SD game.
If I were a bench manager and I had to face a man on second/no out situation I'd start the inning off with a high K ratio, low contact specialist like a Chapman or Karinchak, looking for that first out K.
If he would get in trouble with one out relieve him with a groundball/DP inducing pitcher like an Emmanuel Clase or Tyler Rogers type to get that inning ending DP.
That would be my strategy anyway.Comment -
I bet the San Diego Padres ML today and thought my ticket was dead until low and behold with 2 outs in the top of the 9th Fernando Tatis gets a second life after the Houston 1B missed a foul pop and of course he put it in the seats to tie the game with a 3 run homer. The Braves fully support Major League Baseball’s policy on domestic violence which stresses to the fullest that our society cannot and will not tolerate domestic violence in any form. Until the investigation is completed, we will have no further comment and all inquiries into the matter should be referred to the Office of the Commissioner.”
8:27PM: Marcell Ozuna was arrested today in Sandy Springs, Georgia on charges of aggravated assault strangulation and misdemeanor battery – family violence, according to WSBT’s Miles Garrett and ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (Twitter links). Ozuna is expected to be investigated by the league under the provisions of the MLB/MLBPA’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
Under the provisions of the joint policy, the league has the authority to issue discipline regardless of the outcome of the criminal charges leveled against Ozuna, though Ozuna could challenge any discipline to an arbitration panel. Since the policy was instituted in 2015, suspensions have ranged from anywhere from 15 games to a full season, as per the discretion of the Commissioner’s Office.
Ozuna was placed on the 10-day injured list yesterday due to two dislocated fingers on his left hand, and he was expected to miss at least six weeks. Should Ozuna be suspended, he would forfeit any salary owed to him during the missed games. Ozuna re-signed with the Braves on a four-year, $65MM deal this past offseason, and he has roughly $8.12MM remaining on his $12MM salary for the 2021 season.Comment -

I kind of thought if they could get the middle two games that they'd have a chance to win the series behind Kevin Gausman who has been fantastic this year. Sure enough the Giants continue to mash lefties and got just enough runs to beat Kershaw although the bullpen almost gave it away. This team reminds me of the 2010 team but the one difference to me between the two is that that 2010 team had a terrific bullpen anchored by a bonafide closer. This team doesn't have that yet they find ways to win which is enough to give me hope that they could do something this season.Comment -

Opportunities to make…more significant changes are rarely going to happen until six to eight weeks from now,” Cardinals GM Michael Girsch told Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat and other reporters earlier this week. In short, it doesn’t appear too likely that the Cards will be swinging any notable trades in the near future. As Jones notes, the club hasn’t really made any win-now types of deadline moves in recent seasons, and it remains to be seen if the Cards will change course by July 30 of this year.
St. Louis entered Sunday in first place in the NL Central, in a tight race with the Cubs and Brewers. There is certainly room for upgrades on the Cardinals’ roster, with Jones pointing out that (in particular) the bullpen is lacking depth beyond Genesis Cabrera, Giovanny Gallegos, and Alex Reyes. Adding another middle relief type wouldn’t necessarily count as a headline-grabbing move, and by that same token, a team that’s already in “seller mode” might be more willing to part with a reliever now rather than wait until closer to July 30.

- Some bullpen help could come from within, as Andrew Miller could be activated from the 10-day injured list this week. The target date may be Thursday for the start of the Cardinals’ series with the Reds, as manager Mike Shildt told reporters (including MLB.com’s Daniel Guerrero) that wants at least one more Triple-A rehab outing. Miller has been on the IL since April 29 due to a blister on his right foot.
- Paul DeJong’s return date is less certain, as Shildt told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and other reporters yesterday that the shortstop will require a rehab assignment before getting back to the field. A non-displaced left rib fracture sent DeJong to the injured list in the middle of May, and the nature of the injury has kept the Cardinals from pushing too hard: “A non-displaced fracture become a fracture if we don’t take care of it,” Shildt said. DeJong has, at least, been able to take some grounders.
- Pitching prospect Ian Bedell underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this week, as Bedell revealed himself on his Instagram page. The University Of Missouri product was a fourth-round pick for St. Louis in the 2020 draft, so his first minor league season was already canceled by the pandemic, and Bedell only appeared in two games for high-A Peoria before being sidelined with injury. Given the 13-15 month recovery timeline associated with Tommy John procedures, Bedell might face a bit of a squeeze in getting back on the mound before the end of the 2022 minor league season.
