Again, I would feel this way about any coach at any university under these exact same circumstances.
It's his program. It happened in his locker room. It's his long-time friend who, by the way, had been sexually abusing boys during his time there as an assistant. His grad. assistant and former player saw it. I find it odd that you find it odd that I'm holding Paterno's feet to the fire here, t-wizz.

#145Please give 'Ol Joe Shades a damn break!
OMJ!We all know Paterno's been SENILE for the past 20 years! How could he possibly remember any details of his former defensive co-ordinator banging multiple young boys in the arse & sucking their c*cks after he was told?At least PA St can finally hire a new AD who has the BALLS to fire Joe.Wonder if any or all three indicted in the case are Catholic? At least that would explain lending a blind eye & deaf ear to the situation as has been the norm for the past few decades. How about we save the taxpayers of PA a sh*tload of $ & just execute this deviant scumbag Sandusky on pay per view with all proceeds going to the eight or more victims?Comment -

#150is this really that big of a deal? It's just guys goofing off, joshing around in the shower and sh*t
we all did that, played soap battle games and stuff, and yeah sometimes a guy would get a bonar and we'd maybe tease him about it, maybe smack it to annoy him, or if we felt like it maybe suck him off
i mean these kids were getting a lot of attention from guys they looked up to, man these kids must of felt like a million bucks joshing around in the shower with Penn St coaches, being treated as an equal, one of the guys, you know, they really felt like they belonged with a great bunch of guys
whats the big deal?Well Loshak...then you're a polesmoker...soap away....freak

#151He wasnt senile for the 32 years that hee worked side by side with the child rapist. Its obvious that paterno along with penn state administration covered for the rapist. If you dont believe and understand this, you are either ignorant or choosing intentionally not to see the truth. But dont worry, its too late now. The truth will come out, more victims will be identified and paternos legacy will be forever tarnished for protecting a pedophile. I can't believe you are defending him...read the grand juty statementComment -

#152I hope they all burn in Hell for what they did or didnt do. But one thing I will never understand is why dont these kids / now grown men, go back and kill the fuks that raped them as boys? Ive been on a few juries, and id never convict a guy that killed the man that raped him when he was a child.

#155Paterno was very close to retirement anyways, so him leaving his position is kind of a moot point. According to the Attorney General, they're not going after him directly and made a point of saying they're not targeting people morally in the wrong, just legally.
As stated above, there's no defense for this issue not being brought to authorities a LONG time ago. None.Comment -

It wouldn't surprise me if Sandusky pulled the old Budd Dwyer departure route...dude was the Pennsylvania Treasury Secretary when he got bagged....called a press conference, handed out paper copies, reached into a folder and pulled out a 357 Live on CNN and put the barrel in his mouth. #159This is the final year of his contract....with Curley being forced out...that leaves Spanier as his prime defender. This whole thing is disgraceful, and as much as I was a Paterno fan I don't buy the "did the right thing" story. McCreary and Paterno both should of went directly to the police and told Curley after the fact. The "old school" Lion fans thought of Sandusky as a God, the guy who gave PSU their "Linebacker U" nickname...and Paterno was his main guy.

Both the AD and the VP of athletic business services are facing perjury charges. What the authorities are going to do is try to cut a deal with these guys so they give up everyone else that had knowledge of this situation. If you don't think Paterno knew something at some point in time over the 32 years he coached with Sandusky, then you are not thinking about this properly.
Believe me, Paterno knew something but has been protected up until this point. Once the true legal leverage gets placed against the AD and VP, they will start ratting on everyone who was involved with a bigger cover up. Part of that group will include Paterno. That is how these things work. The authorities will go after the biggest names and one of the biggest names involved here was Paterno.
Consequently, even though they are not currently going after Paterno criminally, they will at some point as soon as the AD and VP start chirping. At that point, everything will come out.
This story is just BEGINNING. They will come across many more victims. This guy Sandusky has probably been doing this since he was a young man. He used a charity to find victims. He is the scum of the earth and Paterno and the Penn State administration protected him. That is unforgivable and Paterno will not come out of this unscathed.
Believe me bud, Paterno is not without fault here. Plus, as I stated before, once the civil lawsuits start getting filed by the victims against the university, Paterno will be named personally. He is not going to escape this from either a criminal or civil lawsuit perspective.
Paterno's legacy is dead and based what I read in the grand jury statement, he deserves a whole lot worse than just losing his legacy.Comment -

#161There's this quote from Joe Paterno in 2008: "I always felt that Jerry had two loves: One was obviously his ability, his wanting to help younger people in The Second Mile and being a head coach. He could have been a head coach a couple places, but he really he backed away because they were going to ask him to give up some things in The Second Mile."
aside from maryland offering him a job at one time, isnt this a guy who should have had offers from top schools? im really asking because it seems like there would have HAD to be some knowledge about this EVERYWHERE since the top assistant in CFB didn't get an offer
i only know minor details about him not taking a head job....just seems strange to me....maybe he just didnt want to leave happy valley because he couldnt have done this shlt anywhere elseComment -

Jerry Sandusky's Second Mile Charity Commitment Cost Him Virginia Head Coaching Opportunity
Sandusky lost out on the Virginia Cavaliers head coaching job due to his dedication to the Second Mile charity. At the time, it makes Sandusky sound like a man who has his priorities in check and seems committed to the greater good.
Sandusky’s devotion to the charity was the reason he gave for turning down head football coaching jobs at Temple UniversityComment -

He had a relationship with Paterno not unlike Bud Foster has with Frank Beamer...Chavis has with Miles, etc. PSU was Sandusky's home, and he taught guys like Matt Millen and many great Lion linebacker's how to play the game. His defense's were pretty stout in the day and stuffed many great running backs to help Joe Pa win a couple of titles. His salary was reportedly more staying at Penn State then it was moving.Comment -

#165Totally agree LTA. Once the AD and VP are presented with prospect of a long jail sentence, they will start talking and the massive cover up will be exposed. Whether or nor Paterno knew the full extent of Sandusky's acts, he should have not allowed the guy on campus ever again. I mean he was with a few boys in 2007 in closed practice. Furthermore, Sansdusky was at the PSU facilities as recently as last week. That's absolute preposterous.
Sandusky "retired" in 1998. People actually believe that the man who coordinated one of the best defenses of all time would and inline to become head coach would "retire" is total BS. Paterno knew in 1998 that Sandusky was a liability to say the least. That is why he basically told him to get lost in a nice way but still gave him access to the facilities. That's why in 2002 Sandusky was sexually assaulting the young boy in the shower.Comment -

#167You're on the right track buddy...this angle has already been discussed. He interviewed for a few jobs but ended up not being interested. The reason was because he had this charity which was intertwined with the Penn State athletic department and provided him cover for him to do these dastardly deeds. This story is like an onion with a million layers. At the end of it, Penn State is going to have to pay millions to the victims for their unlawful actions in covering this up. In addition, more than a few, and I'm not ruling out Paterno, end up facing jail time. It's going to be so easy for them to pursue Paterno for perjury if just one of the witnesses says Paterno lied. That's all they need is one. It's over for both Penn State and Paterno.
a) this problem sprouted up in 92....perverts are always perverts...it doesnt just start out of nowhere
b) as tight as the coaching community is i'm convinced that SOMEONE outside of PSU knew about this guy being a diddler...guys who coached and/or played at psu and ended up coaching other places...you think they didnt know? i suspect a lot of schools didnt wanna touch him with a 10 foot pole (no pun intended)....but like i said, i dont know the history of him getting offers and all that other than marylandComment -
