This game is called the Battle for the Bell and there is a traveling trophy of an old riverboat bell that goes to the winning team.
OHIO head Coach Frank Solich has been reported to be putting "a great deal of emphasis" on this game...
because when the undefeated BOBCATS host their arch rivals, MARSHALL U, they're hoping to come out 3-0... something they've been unable to do since 1976.
OHIO sophomore Tyler Tettleton is hoping to change the luck of OHIO U and head coach Frank Solich, who has yet to savor a career victory against the HERD while at OHIO.
In fact, the BOBCATS have not beaten MARSHALL since 2000, losing six straight including the 21-17 2009 Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl.
This will be TETTLETONs third career start. He threw 153 yards and ran for 42 yards and two TDs in the big win v N MEX ST
In that game, NEW MEX ST QB Andrew Manley torched the OHIO D for a whopping 362 yards and two touchdowns.
If you're wanting to bet the HERD, you have to think to yourself- the BOBCATS gave up that many yards in the air and still won by DD. How could you go against them? Well, it's pretty simple. N MEX ST had terrible defense.
Oh, and N MEX ST was horrific on the ground- grabbing 6 yards. That's, SIX yards.
(their following game v MINN the aggies rushed for 133 yds, fyi)
Another thing to consider with the HERD, who are having trouble on the ground as well. (Better than SIX YARDS, though!!)
The BOBCATS defense welcome eight new starters this year.... Obviously the pass D however, is not sound but they somehow they have managed to only give up 13.5 PPG and 58 yards PPG on the ground, so far.
The THUNDERING HERD is lead by freshman 19 year old QB Rakeem Cato, who has been executing greatness in his first two games against higher caliber teams.
In their win vs SOUTHERN MISS the HERD trailed 3-17 with 5:30 left in the 2Q before rallying on 3 TD drives, finishing with 275 yards and two interceptions.
CATO has only been sacked 3 times for 20 yards so far this year.
The HERD defense is also giving up around 50 yards per game on the ground and are hoping future NFL draftee defensive end VINNY CURRY can apply pressure as he did last game (3 sacks).
The biggest problem for the HERD will be run production. They've only managed 175 yards on 60 attempts in two games, avg 2.9 yards per carry. The HERD run game is bad. At least, it has been.
You'd have to ask yourself, if CATO throws for 300+ yds will the HERD-D hold up on its end and allow 20 pts or less? If not, we might see a similar situation to the N MEX ST game. Tons of QB firepower but ultimately a team spinning it's tires, giving up points on the other end.
For the HERD, this game has been called "a trap game waiting to happen", associating it with the 2010 21-24 OT loss to WVU (then the HERD lost its very next game to Bowling Green, 44-28 on the road.)
All-star absence:
VINNY CURRY has been absent from practice, due to "a family emergency". He is questionable to play Saturday.
Obviously this would be a HUGE blow to the d-line of the HERD.
Injury Report:
BOBCATS
MLB Noah Keller (hamstring) is still less than 100 percent but is probable to play against Marshall. The senior sat out the Sept. 10 win against Gardner-Webb.
C Skyler Allen (hamstring) missed three quarters of Ohio’s win over Gardner-Webb on Sept. 10 but is expected to be ready to go for Marshall.
TE Derek Roback (back) and DT Jeff King (knee) are both out for Marshall. It’s possible both could return to practice next week.
HERD
WR Demetrius Evans caught a pass for a 21-yard gain against Southern Miss but was injured later in the game. Evans did not dress for practice Tuesday.
LB Armonze Daniel is a coveted true freshman, but is sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury. He wore a walking boot on his left foot at practice Tuesday
pick coming...
