    College football IS broken, Urban!
As a college football lover, as all of you on this site are, I just wanted to rant a little bit regarding a comment I heard by Urban Meyer on ESPN. He alleged that despite the violations occurring all over the nations top programs (most notably and recently Miami), college football is not broken. His basis was simply because the attendance and interest is at an all time high...I agree, but college football has been a staple for decades in many parts of the country and always will be. But there are many other factors that are contributing to a broken system. The NCAA and the nazis that run it are ruining the sport by investigating every little thing and punishing the programs so severely. When a school of the caliber of USC is banned from bowl games for past violations, the system is broken. Not to mention how unfair it is to the kids who are playing there now. When a coach like "The Vest" is forced to resign, the system is broken. When heisman trophys have to be given back, the system is broken. When a school like Miami will be given the "death penalty," the system is broken Urban. You get my point, and I havent even mentioned the BCS, which is a whole other peice of sh!t topic all together. You can not tell rich boosters what to do with their money, and you cant expect 18-22 year old kids who came from nothing, and arent allowed to work to not accept some gifts. Its just human nature. Its dumb, but it is what it is. I will not stop. You cant tell these athletes, which are the main reason that its a billion dollar industry, they arent allowed to have a piece of the pie. I understand that the NCAA is trying to create a more level playing field. So that smaller schools like a San Diego St can get the same quality recruits as a USC for instance. But high school athletes are not attracted to big time schools for booster money. They go there because of tradition, passion, and commitment to excellence by everyone involved...coaches, fans, and players. These schools have been powerhouses for decades because of this. Thats why we all love college football as well. So stay the f$ck out of these schools business NCAA, you are only further damaging the sport by trying to fix something that cant be fixed. IMHO.

umm, the schools run the ncaa. The ncaa is not some mysterious police force. Any college can just leave the ncaa - there's always the naia.

umm, the schools created and run the bcs.

Yup, you are right, the inmates are running the asylum. Actually, it's the modern Plantation system, just substitute football players for slaves.

Actually, the rfact is that the football players are so stupid that without football, they would have no chance of getting into college to begin with. Let's face it. Most of these idiots would be flippin burgers at McD's or in jail if it were not for football. I do not want to hear anything else about slavery. That is B.S.

Ummm, if the schools impose their own penalties on themselves for violations, AND the NCAA imposes separate restrictions for the same infractions, then by definition they are two separate entities.

I agree, so why do most schools basically do nothing to help the student athlete achieve a decent degree apart from keeping them in barely passible grades to keep them around to make the football program go? It's all about money for the school, it's not about getting these kids a decent education. It's a damnable system that breaks kids and basically teaches them nothing but football.

I saw it at Auburn and at most every other big football program I've seen.

The real measure of a school is the graduation rate. I would put every school that has a rate of less than 90% across the entire sports program on probation, i.e. no sports scholarships if the rate is under 90%. Then at least the "burger flippers" would get out with a basic degree.

Actually, I would slide the % of maximum number of scholarships between 90% and 100% of graduation rate, i.e. 100% graduation rate = 100% scholarships available. 90% = zero scholarships. So, if you graduate at 95%, you get 50%, 93% = 30% scholarships, etc.

Then the plantation system would go away.

Don't believe the hype, schools are only interested in money; they don't give two steaming USC shits about getting kids educated.

Unfortunately, many of the individuals that sit on these committees are more interested in power and control as common sense flies out the window. There are no easy fixes to a complex problem, but over regulation could end up being worse than none at all. By the way, anyone that thinks that major college athletics is analogous to slavery should re-think their position. All of these kids are presented with a golden opportunity that many others would love to have. I understand that some need more mentoring that others, but at some point responsible choices need to be made to take full advantage of an opportunity that is there for the taking.

Ok, now you are going to paint every football player with the same brush. You are an idiot.

I think we need to dispense with the idea that college athletes bring in millions of dollars to their schools. A large majority of schools don't make money on college athletics and have to subsidize sports with general funds and student fees. They're not making money for their schools, they're taking it out of the students' pockets. Even if the football and mens basketball teams bring in most of the money, Title IX forces the schools to spend it on women's and non-revenue sports. Otherwise they couldn't have football or men's basketball at all.

I'm kinda getting tired of hearing everyone talk about how to make college sports "work" because frankly it can't. What we have right now, with the NCAA pretending college sports are for amateurs and players getting paid under the table, is the closest thing we're probably going to get to a functional system.

The basketball and football teams bring in the big boosters and the university presidents are smart and get paid alot of money. I don't think they would support the expenses if they were losing money.
