As a former collegiate kicker I was shocked and appalled when I got my info sent to my in box about the Lou Groza Award finalists this year...
The Southern Miss kicker was on there as expected and I was not shocked to see Ruffer the Notre Dame kid on there as he had been 15-15 but as of last night had missed 3 XPs this year...
As a serious gambler now, I am sure you will all agree that when betting, having a great kicker on your side is a good feeling... that is why I was stunned when Alex Henery of Nebraska was left off the list for Dan Bailey of Oklahoma State (who is a fine kicker as well)....
Alex Henery will leave college football as the most accurate kicker in the history of the game at almost 90% all time on FG attempts and 97.5% on kicks inside of 40 yards... He missed one kick all season (FG or XP) and that was blocked in the Missouri game...
Anybody think I might be successful in writing to several well know CFB writers to raise the issue? It just seems a shame that a kid who will leave as the best ever at something will never win the award that is supposed to go to the best at his position? Also as an interesting side note since I seemed to recall the Texas A&M / Nebraska thread about officiating getting lots of views... it is worth noting that not the teams but Big 12 officials nominate players for awards... seems a bit shady to me...
I am sure Mr Henery will be just fine making about a million dollars next year but still does not seem right..
Thoughts?
