    Key Injuries and News
    Some news and injury reports.

    * Oregon State star wide receiver JAMES ROGERS will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Rogers who has not used his redshirt, may be eligible for a medical hardship that would allow him to play in 2011.

    * Alabama star receiver JULIO JONES has undergone surgery to repair a broken hand suffered Saturday against South Carolina. He will probably return for the LSU game in three weeks.

    * Kentucky stud running back DERRICK LOCKE suffered what appears to be a fairly serious pair of stingers in Saturday's loss to Auburn. He is questionable against South Carolina this weekend. Locke's 574 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns lead the team.

    * Michigan wide receiver MARTAVIOUS ODAMS suffered a broken foot in the loss to Michigan State. He was second on the team in receptions with 15.

    * Mississippi State wide receiver LEON BERRY broke his leg and is likely done for the season. He was averaging almost 24 yards per catch and 27 yards on kickoff returns.

    * Nebraska linebacker WILL COMPTON, who started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2009, suffered a broken bone in his foot two days before the start of the 2010 season. Compton returned to practice this week and could play against Texas this week.

    * Houston is filing the necessary paperwork to appeal the NCAA on behave of quarterback CASE KEENUM for a sixth season of eligibility. Keenum suffered a season ending knee injury on September 29th.

    * Rutgers will start true freshman CHAS DODD at quarterback for the second straight week. In the win over UConn last week, he passed for 322 yards and 2 touchdowns.

    * Florida coach URBAN MEYER said the Gators are suffering from a "lack of commitmen" from some of his players. After back-to-back losses, Florida will host Mississippi State on Saturday.

    * Michigan State has suspended starting cornerback CHRIS RUCKER for at least one game for violating unspecified team rules. The senior has started 30 games with the Spartans.

    * Stanford quarterback ANDREW LUCK completed 20 of 24 passes for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns last week against Southern Cal. He has to be one of the best players in the Pac-10.

      * Alabama starting offensive tackle D.J. FLUKER will miss this week's game against Ole Miss with a severe groin injury suffered in the loss to South Carolina. Alfred McCullough will take his place.

      * Virginia Tech left guard GREG NOSAL earned tough guy points on Saturday, postponing the reattachment of a torn off finger tip to keep playing. The finger tip was stitched back on in the fourth quarter. As for Nosal, he's been surprised the injury has gotten so much attention.

      * South Carolina quarterback STEPHEN GARCIA has been named SEC offensive player of the week after completing 17 of 20 passes and three touchdowns against Alabama. He was also named national offensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

      * Nebraska's TAYLOR MARTINEZ set a school quarterback rushing record with 242 yards and four touchdowns in last week's win over Kansas State.

      * Texas was off last week and seems the practices were more physical than normal. The Horns concentrated on tackling after several miscues in losses to UCLA and Oklahoma. Nebraska, who is next for the Longhorns has a pretty good running quarterback.

      * Georgia running back CALEB KING became the 11th football player arrested this year. Who remembers when Tennessee was the outlaw school in the SEC. No, I haven't forgotten Florida.

      * Arkansas quarterback RYAN MALLETT has passed for 349.6 yards per game, which leads the SEC and is 10th nationally. Auburn, this week's opponent ranks 10th in the 12 team SEC in pass defense, allowing 239.2 yards per game.

        * Penn State starting free safety NICK SUKAY will be lost for the rest of the season with a complete tear of his pectoral muscle. The redshirt junior suffered the injury on the opening kickoff of Saturday's Illinois game. He leads the Nittany Lions with three interceptions.

        * MiamI quarterback JACORY HARRIS is questionable for this week's Duke game because of a pulled groin muscle. Not sure it matters versus a 1-4 Blue Devil team.

        * Notre Dame All-American candidate tight end KYLE RUDOLPH will miss the remainder of the season with a torn hamstring. He will undergo surgery and expects a six month recovery period. Rudolph has 28 receptions this season.

        * South Florida coach Skip Holtz says his quarterback B.J. DANIELS performs well in practice then falters in games. In the Bulls two losses, he has completed only 14 of 43 with six interceptions. Problem for Holtz is the backup is a true freshmen walkon.

        * Syracuse coach DOUG MARRONE has the Big Orange playing a more physical brand of football and it has paid off in a 4-1 start. The whole mindset from the offense to defense is to be physical. Wouldn't surprise me if they beat Pitt this week.

        * Georgia Tech running back ANTHONY ALLEN was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week after rushing for 195 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets win over Virginia last week.

          * Oklahoma State meets Texas Tech Saturday and could do so without a trio of wide receivers. MICHAEL HARRISON is out with a broken finger. JOSH COOPER suffered a head injury and status is uncertain. HUBERT ANYIAN suffered a sprained ankle and is doubtful. Good thing Texas Tech's pass defense is 114th in the nation.

          * Colorado safety ANTHONY PERKINS and backup running back BRIAN LOCKRIDGE have been lost for the season with injuries. Perkins suffered an ACL injury and Lockridge will have surgery on an ankle.

          * Kansas State wide receiver BRODRICK SMITH will be lost for the rest of the season with a broken leg suffered in last week's loss to Nebraska. Smith had 14 catches for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns.

          * UCLA is expected to suspend 3 starters for the Oregon game on October 21, for violating team rules. No names were given that I know of. It is the latest in a series of off field problems for the Bruins.

          * Missouri quarterback BLAINE GABBERT will start against Texas A&M this week after being pulled from the Colorado game with a hip pointer.

                * Florida is giving CHRIS RAINEY a second chance. Coach Urban Meyer partially reinstated Rainey yesterday, a month after the junior was suspended following his arrest on an aggravated stalking charge. Rainey still has some work to do to get back on the field, but there's no question the Gators could use the speedy receiver after two straight losses. Rainey is a great athlete, has great speed, and one of Florida's more dynamic players. He was arrested September 14 and charged with a third degree felony for allegedly sending his former girlfriend a threatening text message that read, in part, "Time to die...." Rainey agreed to a plea deal two weeks ago on a misdemeanor charge. He agreed to perform 10 hours of community service and undergo evaluation and any required counseling for anger management and domestic violence issues. The State Attorney's Office said Rainey has completed the community service.

                * Auburn quarterback CAM NEWTON (transfer from Florida) ranks second in the nation in "touchdown responsibility" with 21 points per game. Newton has had a hand in 21 of the Tigers' 28 touchdowns this season and 21 combined rushing and passing touchdowns are eight most in a single season at Auburn.

                * Arkansas safety TRAMAIN THOMAS effords against Texas A&M have earned him national recognition. Thomas has been named the FWAA-Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week. A 6-0, 198 pound junior from Winnie, Texas, registered a season high seven tackles along with an interception, one fumble recovery, a pass deflection and a tackle for loss in Arkansas' 24-17 win over Texas A&M. Some say he even sold cokes and popcorn at halftime.

                  * Florida running back JEFF DEMPS sat out last Saturday's loss to LSU and was very limited in the previous two games because of a sprain foot. Look for Demps to play this week against Mississippi State.

                  * Texas quarterback COLT MCCOY will have his jersey retired before the October 30 game with Baylor. McCoy set an NCAA record with 45 wins during his 4 years in Austin. He will join Earl Cambell, Bobby Layne, Tommy Nobis, Ricky Williams and Vince Young as the six players who've had their numbers retired. Not a bad group of football players. Sideline: Tommy Nobis along with Alabama's Lee Roy Jordan are the two best linebackers I have ever seen play college ball. Both were great.

                  * West Virginia quarterback JEREMY JOHNSON has decided to transfer to another school. Lack of playing time and homesickness were factors in Johnson's decision to leave the Mounties. The Houston, Texas native was listed as third on the depth chart.

                  * Kentucky coach Joker Phillips is holding out hope that star running back DERRICK LOCKE might be able to play against South Carolina. Locke suffered stingers in both shoulder where he has lost feeling and noone knows what his status will be. This week, next week or even down the road....either way, big loss for the Wildcats.

                  * ARMY is 4-2 and leads the nation in turn over margin. Ball awareness both in the kicking game and on defense are paying dividends for the Cadets. I love the military academies...GO ARMY!

                  * BYU fired defensive coordinator JAIME HILL and head coach BRONCO MENDENHALL appointed himself in charge of defense. He now spends most of his time coaching the defense designing schemes and strategies and building the defense culture....whatever that means.

                  * Troy had both the Offensive Player of the Week and the Defensive Player of the Week in the Sun Belt Conference this week. Quarterback COREY ROBINSON and linebacker KANORRIS DAVIS won the honors with their play against Middle Tennessee last week.

                        * ARKANSAS ranks second in the SEC in scoring defense, allowing 15 points a game, and is third in total defense, including 19th nationally. A year ago, the Razorbacks finished last in the SEC in total defense and ninth in scoring defense. At Auburn Saturday.

                        * North Carolina running back RYAN HOUSTON has been cleared by the NCAA and will make his 2010 debut at Virginia tomorrow. The senior had been held out of the first five games to determine eligibility. Houston was North Carolina's leading rusher in 2009.

                        * Kentucky not only losses starting running back DERRICK LOCKE for Saturday's game with South Carolina, now, looks like starting defensive end DEQUIN EVANS is out with a sprained ankle.

                        * Clemson wide receiver DEANDRE HOPKINS suffered an injury in practice Wednesday and will probably miss this week's game with Maryland. Hopkins is second on the team in receptions.

                        * Virginia Tech's running back RYAN WILLIAMS will play this week after missing three games with a hamstring injury. Last year he rushed for 1600 yards and 21 touchdowns. Interesting note, the Hokies are 3-0 in games he has missed and 1-2 in games he has started.

                        * Army's defensive end JOSH MCNARY is making a strong case to become the Black Knights first first team All-American in 20 years. Army (4-2) will play Rutgers (3-3) Saturday. McNary, a three year starter holds several records for sacks during his three year career.

                        * ALABAMA and MICHIGAN will open the season in Dallas at the new Cowboy Stadium on September 1, 2012. The game had been in the works for months and is now confirmed. It will be the opener for both schools.

                        * Ole Miss is finally getting a new MASCOT... a black bear. Now all is well with the world.

                        * SYRACUSE is favored in this weekend's game with Pitt. Just shows what a good coach can do for a team and on the flipside, what a bad coach can do for a team. One is definitely a hindrance in my opinon.

                        * Indiana has lost starting running back DARIUS WILLIS for the rest of the season with a groin injury. He will undergo surgery next week and expects a full recovery for next season.

                        * Boston College will start freshman quarterback CHASE RETTIG for a second time against No. 16 Florida State Saturday. The Noles are a three touchdown favorite and should have little trouble in this one.

                        * After Saturday's 45-17 lose to Florida State last week, former Miami players are sounding the alarm and questioning the leadership of the program. Shannon was over his head when he was hired and not a damn thing has changed. Good thing they have Duke this week...then maybe not.

                          * Minnesota coach TIM BREWSTER will be fired if the Gophers lose to Purdue. Word on the street is a sixth straight loss will put Brewster out before the season is over.

                          * ARIZONA has played far above expectations so far this year, but still needs its KICKING GAME to catch up. The Wildcats are last in the Pac-10 and 103rd nationally with 33.1 net yards per punt. To make matters worse, Arizona has only one punter on the roster (senior Keenyn Crier.)

                          * BOISE STATE has surrendered just 14 first quarter points, while scoring 80 points itself. The ponies get off to a fast start for sure.

                          * South Carolina's ole ball coach STEVE SPURRIER is 17-0 against Kentucky, 5-0 coming as the Gamecocks coach. 18 straight after Saturday's game.

                          * NEBRASKA will forego $9.25 million in projected Big-12 payout in order to leave their current conference for the Big Ten July 1, 2011.

                          * MICHIGAN STATE'S previous two games -- Wisconsin, Michigan -- have prepared the Spartans for the offense it will see from Illinois tomorrow. State wins.

                          * FLORIDA STATE has won four consecutive games since losing 47-17 to No. 10 Oklahoma. During that streak, the Noles have outscored opponents by an average margin of 25.8 points...about what they should beat Boston College by.

                          * Washington quarterback JAKE LOCKER suffered a "significant burise" in his quad during last week's game against Arizona. Not sure if he will be 100 percent for Oregon State tomorrow. He has practiced all week and will play, question is how much will it hamper the offensive game plan.

                          * ARMY'S four wins this season is one shy of last years total of five. The Black Knights actually have a chance to reach 10 wins for the first time since 1996. Go Army, Navy, and Air Force!!

                          * Miami defensive tackle JOSH HOLMES and guard JOEL FIGUEROA will miss tomorrow's game against Duke. Also, running back LAMAR MILLER, the team's second leading rusher is listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.

                          * Kansas first year coach TURNER GILL already on the hot seat during his first year...could be. After the 59-7 debacle against in-state rival Kansas State, many of the faithful are talking. The Kansas defense is absolutely awful.

                          * KENTUCKY has allowed only seven sacks all year, while their opponent SOUTH CAROLINA had that many against Alabama. The Gamecocks are second in the nation in sacks.

                          * GEORGIA has won 14 of 15 against VANDERBILT. The Bulldogs are last in the league in pass defense, while the Doars are next to last in pass offense.

                          * WISCONSIN is supposed to be the toughest and loudest place in the Big Ten, but OHIO STATE is 4-1 in its last five trips there. The Buckeyes lead the Big Ten in scoring offense, total defense and turnover margin.

                          * FLORIDA has lost two straight but they haven't dropped three in a row since 1999. They haven't lost at home to MISSISSIPPI STATE since 1981. Gators are banged up at some key positions but will win this one.

more later....................( Frank, give me a call when you read this.)
