I think just about everything ML writes about can be found free on the net these days, or can be easily calced yourself.

The trouble with any midweek newsletter published by anyone is that it is old news. It takes time to print and mail these midweek newsletters. Even if you get them via computer, it still takes time to edit everything.

I suscribed to his newsletter for two seasons. I enjoyed reading it while trying to glean what I thought the most valuable technical 'capping data. Now I don't have time to read newsletters once the season is in progress, but I still purchase Lawrence's Playbook for the technical data. I think it is going a bit far to imply that Lawrence is a scam. He is a technical handicapper as well as a tout. It is also obvious that, like Steele, he is passionate about the game of football, and he does what he does well. All anyone interested in what true scams look like needs to do is a search on amazon.com with the key words "football handicapping." They will soon realize how shameless Amazon is about the "books" they carry and sell. Half the editor's and readers' reviews are phony and amount to gibberish--Allen Moody of SportsGambling.about.com shed some light on this situation last year. At least Marc Lawrence isn't functionally illiterate, unlike so many who write or have written about handicapping.

The best thing about Marc and Steele, for that matter, is their books compile info in one place that you can use to research / check on any db you should be building of the game. I'm in Steele all the time, and I calc my formulas during the season so I really don't need Lawrence's stuff. At one time I was thinking about compiling a set of Lawrence's mags, but then I realized that Steele had much of what I need (I have his mags back to 1996) and Lawrence was redundant for my needs.

Marc Lawrence's newsletter and mid week are great tools to use. But,thinking that you are buying winners and or following week old picks blindly, without using current info to go with these is taking a lazy and weak position. If you are good with that because you do not want to be bothered or do not have the time or interest in handicapping or doing any further research , then he is as good as any, but the chances of making a profit are nil, over time.
Like just about anything wager related......Nothing is easy.
The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I know Mark Lawrence personally, and I know that he puts in a trememdous amount of effort to make people understand that he is a technical 'capper. His publication is one that every solid capper should have, so they can learn the technical side of capping, which is one of the three types of capping that every gambler that knows what he/she is doing (and granted, there are not a lot out there) needs to know. The other two sides are Functional (which 85% of the alleged 'cappers use) and Situational. Yes he is a tout, but the tout business has changed. There are very few people out there who make any type of decent living as touts. Even Phil Steele (who is older than Moses) is in semi-retirement, and while he has the last say about their predictions, his staff actually purchases predictions from other touts, reviews them, and then advertises them as their picks. Steele and Northcoast sports have well over 20 different pick possibilities, including 900 phone lines. This is how they rip you off, because if you give just about every game on any given week, you are going to win a decent percentage of those games. But Steeke puts out an excellent publication. Do not think that because someone offers a tout service their magazines are automatically bad. They are not. Steel's publication is another must have.
When it comes to touts, remember this. If they were anywwheres near as good as they claim to be, they would not be touts. They would be taking the money that they use to set up shop and wagering that money themselves. That is the bottom line. If you were hitting at 70%, would you take your money and pay for office space, phone lines, 800 numbers and a staff to try to sell your picks? Do you think Las Vegas would encourage these guys to come to Vegas and participate in one of their many contests if Vegas were afraid of these guys?
