College Football Week Three: Put up or shutup games
17 September, 2009
It didn’t take long for Tennessee coach Monte Kiffin to announce to the world that he meant business in Knoxville. The problem, of course, is that Kiffin picked on the wrong guy. It’s hard to imagine a coach doing something dumber than baiting Urban Meyer, and now the Volunteers head to Florida for what should be the ultimate put up or shut up game.
A note to Kiffin here: when your team is bringing rubber band guns to a nuclear missile fight, it’s best that you keep your mouth shut and hope for some mercy.
Whether or not Meyer and the Gators are in the mood to show such mercy remains to be seen, but Saturday looks like one of those moments when Tennessee is going to find out where its once proud program really stands in the college football hierarchy.
Gainesville isn’t the only place where a program that’s talked big will get a chance to send a message. There’s also the lowly Clemson Tigers, who have been a regular disappointment. They missed chance one last week against Georgia Tech, and if Dabo Swinney wants his new regime to gain traction with the Clemson faithful, a win over division foe Boston College is an absolute must. More than that, Clemson needs to look good doing it, as this is a game they have no business losing.
Last week, someone woke up Bobby Bowden just in time for him to see his team come back and beat FCS opponent Jacksonville State in Doak Campbell Stadium. Things are ugly down in Tallahassee, and there’s nothing easy about their week three draw. The Noles head to Provo, Utah, where BYU is waiting on them. The Cougars followed up their week one beating of Oklahoma with a dominant performance on the road at Tulane. The elevation, travel, and the fact that FSU just isn’t very good right now are all working in BYU’s favor. If Florida State wants to retain the slightest bit of national relevance, they had better pull off a miracle in the mountains.
