weekend ncaa football primer from mike
Villanova at Temple, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Two Philly "Big Five" members get together. Alas, it's in football. Villanova was an FCS playoff team last season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Temple 20-13.
South Carolina at N.C. State, 7 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: This is the fourth time in Steve Spurrier's five seasons at South Carolina that the Gamecocks have opened the season on a Thursday night. This is a big one for both teams. Will either team be able to run effectively?THE LINE: NC State by 5. THE PICK: South Carolina 23-21.
Troy at Bowling Green, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Troy's offensive coordinator is Tony Franklin, who held the same post for a little more than half a season at Auburn last season. Bowling Green's new coach is Dave Clawson, who was offensive coordinator at Tennessee last season. There were 26 total points scored in that one; there could be 26 points in the first quarter in this one.THE LINE: Troy by 7. THE PICK: Troy 31-21.
Coastal Carolina at Kent State, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Coastal Carolina, a member of the FCS Big South Conference, opened last season at Penn State. This season's opener is a wee bit easier for the Chanticleers.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Kent State 31-14.
North Texas at Ball State, 7:30 p.m., ESPNUTHE BUZZ: Both teams are breaking in touted redshirt freshman quarterbacks. At UNT, it's Riley Dodge, the son of coach Todd Dodge ; Riley once was a Texas commitment before deciding to play for his dad. At Ball State's, it's Kelly Page, who - like Dodge - is from a Dallas suburb.THE LINE: Ball State by 16.5. THE PICK: Ball State 40-27.
Eastern Kentucky at Indiana, 8 p.m., Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: Eastern Kentucky, a solid FCS program, opened last season against Cincinnati. The Colonels have sets their sights a little lower this season, and this could be interesting into the third quarter.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Indiana 34-21.
North Dakota State at Iowa State, 8 p.m.THE BUZZ: Iowa State is on its third coach in four seasons. FCS member North Dakota State will look to run the ball on a Cyclones defense that was pitiful last season. Iowa State's offense bears watching; the new coordinator is Tom Herman, who oversaw a powerful attack at Rice.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Iowa State 31-20.
Utah State at Utah, 9 p.m., The mtn.THE BUZZ: Possible chatter before the game between any Utah player and new Utah State coach Gary Andersen, who was the Utes' defensive coordinator last season: "Hey, Coach Andersen, how's it going? How's the family? Ummm, I like you and everything, but ... well, you know ... we're going to crush you."THE LINE: Utah by 20.5. THE PICK: Utah 40-23.
Oregon at Boise State, 10:15 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: Is this the biggest game in Boise State history? That case certainly can be made. This likely will be the only top-25 opponent of the season for Boise, which easily could go 13-0 - and nab a BCS bid - if it wins this. Boise won in Eugene last season.THE LINE: Boise State by 3.5. THE PICK: Oregon 31-27.
    FRIDAY'S GAMES
Tulsa at Tulane, 8 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: An intriguing Conference USA game. Tulsa is replacing its quarterback - coach Todd Graham hasn't said who it is yet - and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who left for Auburn. Tulane also is breaking in a new quarterback, and Joe Kemp looks to be a nice fit for what coach Bob Toledo wants. One likely advantage for Tulsa: On paper, its defense looks much stronger than Tulane's.THE LINE: Tulsa by 14. THE PICK: Tulsa 41-21.
Central Arkansas at Hawaii, 1:05 a.m.THE BUZZ: Central Arkansas is ranked 12th in the preseason FCS coaches' poll. Hawaii doesn't play at home again until Oct. 10, a stretch of 36 days.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Hawaii 33-17.
    SATURDAY'S GAMES
Akron at Penn State, noon, Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: This might be the toughest non-conference game of the season for the Nittany Lions, who have the Zips, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois outside of Big Ten play.THE LINE: Penn State by 27. THE PICK: Penn State 48-17.
Minnesota at Syracuse, noon, ESPN2THE BUZZ: The Greg Paulus era begins at Syracuse, which makes this worth watching - for a while, at least. Minnesota thinks it can be a contender in the Big Ten, but to be taken seriously, the Golden Gophers have to beat teams such as Syracuse.THE LINE: Minnesota by 6.5. THE PICK: Minnesota 27-14.
Liberty at West Virginia, noon, Big East syndication/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: On the heels of the Pat White era comes the Jarrett Brown era for West Virginia. FCS member Liberty is coming off a 10-2 season, but just seven starters are back for the Flames.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: West Virginia 38-14.
Appalachian State at East Carolina, noon, MASNTHE BUZZ: This is the 30th meeting in the series, which Appalachian State leads 19-10. But the schools haven't met since 1979. Appalachian State is No. 1 in the FCS preseason coaches' poll, but likely will be without injured star QB Armanti Edwards.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: East Carolina 27-14.
Western Kentucky at Tennessee, noon, SEC syndication/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: The Lane Kiffin era begins with what should be a gimme game against Western Kentucky, which is playing its first game as a full-fledged FBS member.THE LINE: Tennessee by 29.5. THE PICK: Tennessee 37-10.
Kentucky vs. Miami University at Cincinnati, noon, ESPNUTHE BUZZ: Kentucky has won 14 consecutive non-conference games, the second-longest streak in the nation to LSU's 19. This is the first game for Miami coach Mike Heywood.THE LINE: Kentucky by 15. THE PICK: Kentucky 35-10.
Montana State at Michigan State, noonTHE BUZZ: Michigan State is breaking in a new quarterback (Kirk Cousins) and a new running back (Caulton Ray). Former Oregon player Cody Kempt is FCS member Montana State's starting quarterback.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Michigan State 44-13.
Towson at Northwestern, noon, Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: Northwestern has some questions on offense, but playing a bad FCS team really isn't going to tell Wildcats coaches anything. Towson's new coach is Rob Ambrose, who was UConn's offensive coordinator last season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Northwestern 33-10.
Navy at Ohio State, noon, ESPNTHE BUZZ: Navy QB Ricky Dobbs is an exciting runner. So is Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor. Given the Buckeyes' questions at wide receiver and running back, you have to think Ohio State coaches will loosen the reins on Pryor this season.THE LINE: Ohio State by 21.5. THE PICK: Ohio State 41-17.
Toledo at Purdue, noon, Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: This is one of four Big Ten-MAC games this week. This is the first game for Rockets coach Tim Beckman, a one-time Ohio State assistant.THE LINE: Purdue by 10.5. THE PICK: Purdue 26-17.
Northern Iowa at Iowa, noon, Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: The Hawkeyes need an easy opener after finding out this week that starting TB Jewel Hampton would miss the season. Iowa leads this series 13-1, with the UNI win coming way back in 1898.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Iowa 31-13.
Youngstown State at Pittsburgh, 1 p.m.THE BUZZ: Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt got his first victory as the Panthers' head man with a 41-0 win over Youngstown State on Sept. 24, 2005. Pitt was 0-3 at the time.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Pittsburgh 38-7.
Jacksonville State at Georgia Tech, 1 p.m.THE BUZZ: Jacksonville State has two former five-star prospects (former Florida DT Torrey Davis, former LSU QB Ryan Perrilloux), which is two more than Georgia Tech. Perrilloux has been suspended for this game, though.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Georgia Tech 34-13.
Nicholls State at Air Force, 2 p.m.THE BUZZ: FCS member Nicholls State is in Thibodaux, La., which is about 13 feet above sea level. This game is in Colorado Springs, Colo., which is about 6,100 feet above sea level. Both schools run a variation of the triple option.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Air Force 42-20.
Northeastern at Boston College, 2 p.m.THE BUZZ: The campuses are about five miles apart, but the difference in talent is way more than that. FCS member Northeastern has won a combined 12 games over the past four seasons, and a visit from the Huskies should help a battered BC team start the season with a win.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Boston College 23-10.
Portland State at Oregon State, 2:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net NorthwestTHE BUZZ: Jerry Glanville is the coach at FCS member Portland State. While the game won't be close, Glanville could do some fun stuff on the sideline. Oregon State has won 25 consecutive non-conference home games.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Oregon State 44-14.
Weber State at Wyoming, 3 p.m.THE BUZZ: This is a dangerous game for Wyoming, which has a new coach (Dave Christensen, who had been offensive coordinator at Missouri) and a new quarterback who hasn't taken a snap in a college game. At least the Cowboys have a good defense. Pass-happy Weber State - led by former Utah coach Ron McBride - made it to the FCS quarterfinals last season and opens this season ranked ninth in the FCS coaches' poll.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Wyoming 20-17.
Jackson State at Mississippi State, 3:30 p.m., ESPNUTHE BUZZ: There's some history in this one. It's the first game for new Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen. It's the first-ever football game between an SEC school and a Southwestern Athletic Conference school. And it's the first-ever meeting between one of Mississippi's SEC schools and a historically black college or university. Plus, Jackson State starting QB Trae Rutland is a former Mississippi State player.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Mississippi State 33-13.
Baylor at Wake Forest, 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: An under-the-radar game that's important for both teams. Baylor hasn't been to a bowl since 1994, and sweeping its four non-conference games would go a long way toward ending that drought. Wake has a rebuilt defense that will be tested by Baylor sophomore QB Robert Griffin.THE LINE: Wake by 2.5. THE PICK: Wake 24-23.
Western Michigan at Michigan, 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: You have to think Michigan folks are a little uneasy about this one. First, while Western Michigan has a questionable defense, it also has a big-time quarterback in Tim Hiller. Second, the Wolverines will be using two true freshmen at quarterback. Third - and most important - there have been all sorts of distractions for the Wolverines this week, and focusing on off-field stuff instead of on Western Michigan could end up costing the Wolverines.THE LINE: Michigan by 12.5. THE PICK: Michigan 27-21.
Nevada at Notre Dame, 3:30 p.m., NBCTHE BUZZ: A lot of folks are predicting big things for the Irish this season. But Notre Dame better not take the Wolf Pack lightly. Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick could have a huge game on the ground. But Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen should have a huge game in the air. The Irish ended last season by routing a WAC opponent, and now get another one to open this season.THE LINE: Notre Dame by 14.5. THE PICK: Notre Dame 37-24.
Georgia at Oklahoma State, 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: A huge game, especially for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have received a ton of preseason hype, but all that attention vanishes if they lose their opener. Georgia is under the radar this season, which is when Mark Richt teams usually perform their best. If Georgia bottles up Oklahoma State TB Kendall Hunter, the Bulldogs likely leave Stillwater with a victory.THE LINE: Oklahoma State by 5. THE PICK: Oklahoma State 31-28.
San Jose State at USC, 3:30 p.m., Fox Sports NetTHE BUZZ: USC has been battered by injuries and ineligibility rulings of late, but the Trojans still should cruise. This is the debut of touted true freshman QB Matt Barkley, and that makes this worth watching.THE LINE: USC by 33. THE PICK: USC 38-7.
Missouri vs. Illinois in St. Louis, 3:40 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: When these teams met last season, it was one of the biggest opening-week games. This season, no one really is mentioning it. But this game has a lot of intrigue. For Mizzou, the question is whether the Tigers can keep it going without QB Chase Daniel, WR Jeremy Maclin, et. al. For the Illini, the question is whether new offensive coordinator Mike Schultz (who was hired away from TCU) can rev up the rushing attack and take some pressure off QB Juice Williams.THE LINE: Illinois by 6.5. THE PICK: Illinois 35-30.
Rice at UAB, 4 p.m., Comcast/Charter Sports SoutheastTHE BUZZ: A quasi-important C-USA game. Why is it quasi-important? Because the loser is in line to be the worst team in the league this season. UAB's Joe Webb might be the best running quarterback in the nation. Rice, meanwhile, is looking for an adequate replacement for departed QB Chase Clement.THE LINE: UAB by 5.5. THE PICK: UAB 37-33.
Southern Illinois at Marshall, 4:30 p.m.THE BUZZ: SIU has become one of the most consistent programs in the FCS ranks. Marshall coach Mark Snyder is on the hot seat, and his team desperately needs to win this.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Marshall 28-17.
Northwestern State (La.) at Houston, 5 p.m.THE BUZZ: Northwestern's new coach is Bradley Dale Pevoto, who was co-defensive coordinator at LSU last season. LSU had some defensive issues at times last season, and Pevoto's new defense is going to get shredded in this one by a Houston offense that might be the most productive in the nation.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Houston 59-24.
Middle Tennessee at Clemson, 6 p.m.THE BUZZ: Clemson is at Georgia Tech on Thursday in a key ACC showdown, but the Tigers better not overlook MTSU, whose offense should be productive. MTSU has a solid secondary, but the Blue Raiders' run defense is a huge question. Does that mean a big day for Clemson senior RB C.J. Spiller ?THE LINE: Clemson by 18.5. THE PICK: Clemson 34-17.
Stanford at Washington State, 6 p.m., Fox Sports Net NorthwestTHE BUZZ: Stanford has designs on its first bowl since 2001, and teams that want to go bowling don't lose to Washington State. Stanford's new quarterback is redshirt freshman Andrew Luck, the son of former NFL QB Oliver Luck.THE LINE: Stanford by 16.5. THE PICK: Stanford 44-24..
The Citadel at North Carolina, 6 p.m.THE BUZZ: UNC is 3-0 all-time vs. the Bulldogs, outscoring them 109-21. The Citadel's starting tight end is B.J. Phillips, who transferred from UNC after last season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: North Carolina 48-10.
William & Mary at Virginia, 6 p.m.THE BUZZ: Here's something you don't see every day - Virginia starting QB Vic Hall also will return punts. This is the 33rd meeting in the series, and UVa leads 26-5-1. William & Mary is ranked 14th in the preseason FCS coaches' poll.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Virginia 23-17.
Missouri State vs. Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark., 7 p.m., ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: Missouri State has an experienced secondary, but that shouldn't matter as Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett makes his first start for the Hogs. Mallett will be throwing early and often - and he'll be throwing deep, too.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Arkansas 44-16.
Louisiana Tech at Auburn, 7 p.m., ESPNUTHE BUZZ: The Gene Chizik era begins at Auburn, and you know he wishes he were playing an easy FCS opponent. Louisiana Tech can play defense, and given the offensive uncertainties at Auburn, this could be closer than the Tigers want.THE LINE: Auburn by 13.5. THE PICK: Auburn 20-10.
Richmond at Duke, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: This is one of five games this week involving an ACC-FCS matchup. Richmond is the defending FCS champion and returns 18 starters, so this has "upset alert" written all over it. And the last time these teams met, Richmond won 13-0 in 2006.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Duke 20-17.
Charleston Southern at Florida, 7 p.m., Fox Sports South/Sun Sports/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: Charleston Southern? What - Gainesville High wasn't available?THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Florida 77-0.
Southern U. at Louisiana-Lafayette, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: The campuses are about 60 miles apart, but this is the first meeting between the teams. ULL was seventh nationally in rushing offense last season, but lost two 1,000-yard rushers. Still, the offensive line returns intact.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Louisiana-Lafayette 23-14.
Wofford at USF, 7 p.m., ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: Wofford is coming off back-to-back FCS playoff appearances, but the Terriers return just nine starters. USF is 12-0 all-time in home openers and should make it 13-0.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: USF 38-17.
Alcorn State at Southern Miss, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: This is the first meeting of the schools, whose campuses are about 100 miles apart. Southern Miss has had 15 consecutive winning seasons, and this opener will get the Golden Eagles off to a good start this season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Southern Miss 52-17.
Army at Eastern Michigan, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: The hounds make their way to the Detroit area to watch new coaches (Army's Rich Ellerson and Eastern Michigan's Ron English) go at it. This is the season's first "Dog of the Week."THE LINE: Eastern Michigan by 5.5. THE PICK: Eastern Michigan 28-16.
Northern Colorado at Kansas, 7 p.m., Fox College Sports CentralTHE BUZZ: Heck, KU fans can start celebrating a 1-0 start now - Northern Colorado has had three consecutive one-win seasons.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Kansas 66-13.
Florida Atlantic at Nebraska, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: FAU QB Rusty Smith is a proven commodity, and he and his receivers could have a big day if he gets time to throw. Huskers QB Zac Lee will be making his first career start, and he likely will lean on RB Roy Helu Jr. against a rebuilt FAU defensive front seven.THE LINE: Nebraska by 22.5. THE PICK: Nebraska 42-21.
Connecticut at Ohio U., 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Ohio U. is seen as a potential surprise team in the MAC, and beating a Big East team would get the Bobcats even more notice. UConn's defense again should be stifling. But numerous questions remain about the Huskies' offense.THE LINE: UConn by 3.5. THE PICK: UConn 20-14.
Northern Illinois at Wisconsin, 7 p.m., Big Ten NetworkTHE BUZZ: NIU was surprisingly good in coach Jerry Kill's first season in '08. The Badgers will be breaking in new QB Scott Tolzien, a junior; Dustin Sherer, who started last season, is the third-teamer now.THE LINE: Wisconsin by 16.5. THE PICK: Wisconsin 23-14.
BYU vs. Oklahoma in Arlington, Texas, 7 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: The last time Oklahoma opened against a team from the Mountain West Conference, it lost - at home - to TCU in 2005. This game is to be played in the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium, so fans will sit in palatial surroundings to see the Sooners roll.THE LINE: Oklahoma by 22. THE PICK: Oklahoma 49-21.
Louisiana-Monroe at Texas, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: "The Colt McCoy for Heisman" campaign should get off to a rousing start. ULM actually has a solid secondary, but it's hard to see the Warhawks getting much pressure on McCoy, which means he'll have all day to throw.THE LINE: Texas by 41.5. THE PICK: Texas 59-14.
New Mexico at Texas A&M, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: There already are rumblings about A&M coach Mike Sherman, who is headed into his second season. A&M opened last season with a home loss to Arkansas State. Aggies fans don't want another season-opening loss. This is the first game for New Mexico coach Mike Locksley, who had been the offensive coordinator at Illinois.THE LINE: Texas A&M by 14. THE PICK: Texas A&M 33-21.
North Dakota at Texas Tech, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Oh, my. This is North Dakota's second season as a transitional FCS member - and this is the first game in school history against an FBS foe.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Texas Tech 84-20.
Mississippi Valley at Arkansas State, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: Mississippi Valley's head coach is Willie Totten, who was nicknamed "Satellite" when he was MVSU's quarterback and throwing to Jerry Rice in the 1980s. Too bad there are no Rices on this season's Delta Devils roster - or Tottens, either.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Arkansas State 49-16.
Massachusetts at Kansas State, 7 p.m.THE BUZZ: This is the "Welcome Back, Bill Snyder " game for K-State, complete with FCS opponent.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Kansas State 24-14.
Indiana State (0-1) at Louisville, 7:30 p.m., ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: Indiana State is awful; the FCS Sycamores have won one game - one - in the past four seasons, and they lost their opener last week to Quincy (Ill.), an NAIA school. What that means is that while Louisville has some questions, it will roll in this one.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Louisville 56-9.
Samford at UCF, 7:30 p.m.THE BUZZ: Former Auburn Heisman winner Pat Sullivan is Samford's coach. Sullivan is 59, but he still might be the best quarterback on the field.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: UCF 27-7.
Western Carolina at Vanderbilt, 7:30 p.m., CSS/ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: Vandy is hoping to make back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history. An opener against FCS member Western Carolina will be a good start on the way to the requisite six wins needed for bowl eligibility.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Vanderbilt 33-10.
San Diego State at UCLA, 7:30 p.m., Fox Sports West/Fox College Sports AtlanticTHE BUZZ: This the first game for San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, who led Ball State to a 12-2 record last season. This also is the first game for new UCLA starting QB Kevin Prince, a redshirt freshman. SDSU offensive coordinator Al Borges is a former UCLA coordinator.THE LINE: UCLA by 19.5. THE PICK: UCLA 30-17.
Alabama vs. Virginia Tech in Atlanta, 8 p.m., ABCTHE BUZZ: Last season, Alabama used a victory over the preseason ACC favorite in Atlanta to jump-start a fabulous season. It's the same scenario, except for a different team, this season for the Tide. This season's opponent will be better-prepared - and bring a much better defense to the field. If you like defensive slugfests, you should love this one.THE LINE: Alabama by 6.5. THE PICK: Virginia Tech 20-17.
Stephen F. Austin at SMU, 8 p.m.THE BUZZ: SMU is billing its opener as a "white-out game." Usually, those are reserved for big games. But given SMU's poor play the past couple of decades ... Expect a ton of passes: June Jones is SMU's coach and SFA QB Jeremy Moses threw for 4,026 yards and 41 TDs last season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: SMU 41-26.
Idaho at New Mexico State, 8 p.m., ESPN GamePlanTHE BUZZ: It's the first week of the season, yet these teams are getting together for a key WAC game. And by "key," we mean the loser likely finishes last in the league.THE LINE: New Mexico State by 2.5. THE PICK: New Mexico State 29-24.
Buffalo at UTEP, 9 p.m., CBS College SportsTHE BUZZ: This game would have had more intrigue had Buffalo RB James Starks not been lost for the season. Buffalo doesn't have many offensive weapons now; that's not the case with UTEP. Thing is, UTEP's defense was awful last season, and unless it has improved, even a depleted Buffalo offense might be able to take advantage.THE LINE: UTEP by 8. THE PICK: UTEP 38-24.
Central Michigan at Arizona, 10 p.m.THE BUZZ: Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour and his wide receivers should keep things interesting for a while, but the Wildcats' rushing offense should prove too much for the Chippewas.THE LINE: Arizona by 13.5. THE PICK: Arizona 34-28.
Idaho State at Arizona State, 10 p.m., Fox Sports Arizona/Fox College Sports PacificTHE BUZZ: Idaho State was 1-11 last season and has had just five winning seasons in the past 20. The Bengals have played nine FBS opponents this decade and lost by an average of 27 points.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Arizona State 51-13.
Maryland at California, 10 p.m., ESPN2THE BUZZ: Cal thinks it can contend for the Pac-10 championship, thanks to RB Jahvid Best and what should be a stout defense. Teams that think they can win the Pac-10 title don't lose to middle-of-the-pack ACC teams such as Maryland.THE LINE: California by 21. THE PICK: California 34-17.
UC Davis at Fresno State, 10 p.m.THE BUZZ: The campuses are about 150 miles apart and this is the 18th meeting in the series. But it's the first meeting since 1952. UC Davis loves to pass, Fresno loves to run.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Fresno State 37-17.
Sacramento State at UNLV, 10 p.m.THE BUZZ: FCS member Sacramento State hasn't had a winning record since 2000, but the Hornets lost by just three points to Colorado State - a UNLV rival in the Mountain West - last season.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: UNLV 40-21.
LSU at Washington, 10:30 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: The first game for Washington coach Steve Sarkisian likely won't be a pleasant memory. The quarterbacks are on the spot - Jordan Jefferson for LSU and Jake Locker for Washington.THE LINE: LSU by 17.5. THE PICK: LSU 38-17.
    SUNDAY'S GAMES
Ole Miss at Memphis, 3:30 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: This is the 59th meeting in the series, which Ole Miss leads 46-10-2. Memphis' last win came in 2003 at home in the first game of Eli Manning's senior season.THE LINE: Ole Miss by 17. THE PICK: Ole Miss 42-24.
Colorado State at Colorado, 7 p.m., Fox Sports NetTHE BUZZ: The fan bases are not friendly. The Buffs think they can contend in the Big 12 North and are hopeful a strong rushing attack can carry them. But there are questions about CU's quarterback situation. Thing is, CU's quarterbacks look like Dan Marino in his prime compared to Colorado State's.THE LINE: Colorado by 10. THE PICK: Colorado 35-21.
    MONDAY'S GAMES
Cincinnati at Rutgers, 4 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: It might be the conference opener, but this is one of the most important Big East games of the season. Both have legit reasons to think they can win the Big East. Rutgers' hopes are centered on its defense and its offensive line, Cincy's on what should be an explosive offense. But can Rutgers consistently move the ball? And can Cincy stop anyone with its rebuilt defense?THE LINE: Rutgers by 6. THE PICK: Cincinnati 27-21.
Miami at Florida State, 8 p.m., ESPNTHE BUZZ: These teams have played some classics in the past. But not lately. Each is looking to regain lost respect. Both teams have questions on both sides of the ball. The strongest unit looks to be FSU's offensive line, and the Seminoles won't win unless they can run effectively.THE LINE: Florida State by 6.5. THE PICK: Florida State 20-17.

The Colonels have sets their sights a little lower this season, and this could be interesting into the third quarter.THE LINE: No line. THE PICK: Indiana 34-21.

North Texas up 7-0 early into 2nd period returns an INT 95 yards for the TD, but brought back on a silly block in back on the BS QB.

        Still 7-0 12 mins left 2nd period.
