Steve Spurrier cleared up the biggest mystery swirling around the Southeastern Conference when he said it was South Carolina that left Tim Tebow off the preseason all-SEC ballot
The Gamecocks coach said Friday at the SEC's media days that the director of football operations filled out the ballot in his stead and voted for Mississippi's Jevan Snead.
Spurrier said he was embarrassed about it and has already apologized to Tebow. He said the SEC has let him amend the ballot to add Tebow.
The former Gators coach, who called Tebow the best football player in the country, said he has never filled out a preseason All-SEC ballot himself.

Anonymously, of course. The SEC doesn't reveal the vote totals, who voted for whom or if the coaches actually voted.
"I've never filled one out," Spurrier said, "but I usually look at it."
This came from a guy with a coaches poll vote. This from a guy who has been adamant about his fellow coaches disclosing their final ballots in that poll. You can't do one thing and say the other.
        Can you?
"I don't know why we vote," Spurrier said of the SEC ballot. "I guess we vote 'cause college football is still without a playoff system. I really believe most coaches do not know a whole lot about the other teams."

At the College Football Roundtable each week, we ask each member of the college football coverage staff for his opinion about a topic in the sport.
Which school do you see as the most prohibitive favorite in its conference?
The team that should be the heaviest favorite to win its league is WAC powerhouse Boise State. QB Kellen Moore will keep the Broncos among the nation's highest-scoring teams. The defense is solid, too. Sure, road trips to Fresno, Hawaii and Louisiana Tech could be dicey, but if Boise State gets by Oregon in the season opener, an undefeated season is a real possibility.
                                - OLIN BUCHANAN
No one in the WAC can touch the Broncos. Hawaii rose up in 2007 andNevada has made the Broncos sweat the past two seasons, but Boise State should have little trouble winning the league. A young team with a redshirt freshman quarterback started 12-0 last season. What happens with all of that talent back on the roster? The best the rest of the league can hope for is that Oregon beats Boise State in the opener and the Broncos let that disappointment drag them down for the rest of the year.
                                - DAVID FOX
I would be surprised if any league opponent stays within 10 points of the Broncos, who look to have way too much talent for the rest of the conference. Plus, the second-best team in the league, Nevada, has to play at Boise. The Broncos are 23-1 in WAC play in coach Chris Petersen's three seasons, and they have lost just twice in WAC play in their seven seasons in the league.
                                - MIKE HUGUENIN
Florida and Virginia Tech are overwhelming preseason picks to win their conferences, but both schools have plenty of worthy competitors. That's why I have to go with Boise State. The Broncos are the only WAC team in the Rivals.com preseason top 50 countdown. Boise State's toughest challenger in the WAC is Nevada, which will have to face the Broncos in Boise. While it would be somewhat surprising if Florida, Virginia Tech or USC failed to win its conference title, I'd be stunned if Boise State isn't atop the WAC standings at the end of the season.

                                Pac-10 Money Makers
Even though the conference was down, there was an easy way to make money betting on Pac-10 games last season. All one had to do was to play the betting choice in every single league battle since the favorite prevailed 59% of the time

WASHINGTON STATE - The Cougars finished 1-11 in FBS play last year while being outscored 561-117 for a 47-10 average. They are 4-8 ATS as a road underdog the last two seasons
UCLA - The Bruins have 16 returning starters after just six came back a year ago. UCLA is 20-5 ATS off a SU loss the last five years (5-2 in '08) and 24-8 ATS in its last 32 home games.
ARIZONA STATE - The Sun Devils won just five games last year for their first losing season since '03. They are 1-6-1 ATS as an underdog the last two years.
OREGON STATE - The Beavers are 28-12 SU and sport the second-best conference winning percentage behind USC over the last three years. They are also 24-14 ATS (9-4 as a home favorite) over that time span.
OREGON - It was an up-and-down offseason for the Ducks, with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly taking over for Mike Bellotti, and multiple players leaving the program.
STANFORD - Last year's five victories equaled the total of the previous two seasons. The Cardinal has not been to a bowl game since '01 despite a 9-3 ATS mark as a home favorite over the last seven years.
ARIZONA - The Wildcats defeated ASU to reach the postseason for the first time in 10 years. They are also 8-4-1 ATS in their last 10 games as a home underdog.
SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans, who have won the conference title every year since '03, are 11-1 ATS in non-conference play the last three years, but only 10-16-1 ATS in the Pac-10.
CALIFORNIA - The Golden Bears rebounded from a 3-6 Pac-10 record in '07 to post a 6-3 mark last year. However, they are 1-6 ATS as road favorites the last two seasons.

                                Big East trends:
Back in '06, the league went 27-11-1 ATS (71%) in non-conference matchups with a 16-5 ATS mark (76%) vs. other BCS teams. Two years ago, the numbers fell (23-16 and 9-9). Last season the Big East went 16-24 ATS (40%) out-of- conference even though the eight teams won 26 games straight up for the second consecutive year. The league finished 10th out of the 11 conferences vs. BCS teams with a 7-13 ATS mark, including four failed covers in bowl games. The WAC held the bottom position at 5-14.
The only time to bet on Big East teams is in conference play where the underdog has a 59% winning percentage. In fact, the "dog" has covered better than 50% each of the last three seasons.
                                LOUISVILLE
Steve Kragthorpe after a pair of bowl-less campaigns in his only two years with the Cardinals is just 4-10 ATS in conference play and 8-14 ATS overall in those two seasons.
                                CONNECTICUT
The Huskies are 8-2 ATS as a home underdog the last four years but just 5-14 ATS as a road underdog over the last five.
                                RUTGERS
They went 7-0 ATS in conference play and have now covered eight of their last 10 as a road underdog.
                                PITTSBURGH
The Panthers have fallen short as home favorites (2-6 ATS) and succeeded as road dogs (7-2 ATS) over the last two years.
                                CINCINNATI
The Bearcats broke a school record with 11 wins but have only one returning defensive starter. Over the last three years, they are 8-2 ATS off a SU loss, 5-1 as home underdogs and 13-7-1 in league play.
                                SOUTH FLORIDA
Over the last two regular seasons, the Bulls are 11-1 SU (6-5 ATS) in the first half of the year but just 5-7 SU (6-6 ATS) in the second. They are 3-7 ATS as road favorites in that time span but 3-0 ATS when getting points. Remember, they lost their PK and lead scorer from ‘08 to inj.
                                WEST VIRGINIA
The Mountaineers won nine games last year despite bringing back only three defensive starters. They are just 7-13-1 in Big East play the last three years against the spread.

These are easily found and I know some people think trends are overrated and one should never bet purely based on them. I do prefer and use coach vs coach as a good indicator of who trumps whom in match-ups. I tend to discard team trends when it comes to new HC's. Afterall, history does teach lessons.

Still, the ATS records fell from 8-4-1 ATS (65%) in '06 to 9-7 (56%) last year. The conference champ has gone undefeated in league play every year since '04, so this year's winner could get another crack at a BCS bowl game.
COLORADO STATE - The Rams won four of six games decided by a TD or less en route to a 7-6 season and their first bowl victory since '01. They are 9-3 ATS off a SU win over the last three years.

TCU - The Horned Frogs' only two losses last year came at Oklahoma and Utah. They outscored their other 11 opponents by a 417-99 count. TCU is 15-4 as a home favorite the last four years.

MEMPHIS is 19-10 ATS off a SU loss, but 11-24 ATS off a SU win over the last six years.
UAB - The Blazers ended the year winning two of their final three games for a 4-8 SU record. They also covered those three matchups while going 6-2 ATS over the last eight.
UCF - The last two times the Knights recorded four wins or less (4-8 last year), they reached the postseason the following season. In addition, they were 12-6 ATS in their previous two winning campaigns.
EAST CAROLINA after the early upsets of Virginia Tech and West Virginia, they covered just three of their final 12.

                                    WAC
In 2007, the league won just eight of 31 non- conference battles with a 12-19 ATS record. Against BCS teams, they were 3-16 SU and a 7-12 ATS. Last season, the nine clubs gained more SU victories with a 12-23 record, but covered only 13 of the 35 games for a 37% winning percentage. Against the top six conferences, the WAC sported 5-14 marks both SU and ATS.
Seven of the nine teams return their starting quarterback, after losing more than half heading into last season. In addition, the top six rushers in terms of yards per game also return.
IDAHO won just three games the last two years combined.
HAWAII was 2-6 ATS out of conference the last two years.
SAN JOSE STATE are 11-4 ATS home over the last three years.
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs went 7-6 SU, but just 2-11 ATS including an 0-9 stretch from September 13 to November 15. They have been one of the worst ATS teams the last three years at 11-26, and are 5-27-1 ATS off a SU loss the last seven seasons.
LOUISIANA TECH won eight games for the first time this decade, are 5-0 ATS as home underdogs the last two years under 3rd year HC Derek Dooley.
NEVADA are 15-3 ATS as a home favorite over the last five years, but just 4-9 ATS off a SU win in the last two campaigns.

                                    MAC
Last season the MAC went 28-21 ATS in non-conference play, and 17-12 against the top six conferences. Take away the bowl games and those numbers improve to 28-16 (64%) and 17-11 (61%).
The odds are against repeating considering that Ball State( new HC and lost SQB), Buffalo (lost star QB) and Northern Illinois, who combined for 62% (non-conference) and 83% (BCS) figures last year should not be as effective, and it's doubtful Ohio and Akron will pull off a second straight year of 7-0 (out-of-conference) and 5-0 (BCS) records. Moreover, just three squads bring back 16 or more starters, as opposed to seven a season ago.
MAC has 5 new HC’s in 09: BSU,BG, EM, MiO, and Tol..

WESTERN KY had their first losing season (2-10 SU, 3-7 ATS) since 1995. This will be their first full year of FBS action after going 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS records against Sun Belt teams a year ago.

Hawaii receiver Malcolm Lane will redshirt this season to focus on academics. Lane, who was the Warriors' starting right wideout last season, said he will not participate in fall camp.
Jovonte Taylor, who redshirted last season after suffering from a stomach virus, has worked as the No. 1 right wideout in training camp. Taylor is regarded as the Warriors' fastest player.

Virginia Tech leading rusher Darren Evans, who set several school records as a freshman, will miss the entire season with a torn left ACL he suffered in practice on Tuesday, the school announced.
Evans was part of a crowded Virginia Tech backfield, so there is experience behind him, but none of the other players are as accomplished as Evans, who was the MVP of the Orange Bowl and rushed for 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. He originally sprained his knee in Friday's practice.
Highly touted redshirt freshman Ryan Williams is now in a position to follow a similar path Evans did last year, when Evans took over for injured starter Kenny Lewis Jr. Williams stole the spotlight in spring practices and was expected to see significant playing time this fall. Josh Oglesby, a redshirt sophomore who saw some playing time last year, is listed as second on the preseason depth chart behind Evans, with Williams third. Lewis is another option, but he's been struggling to recover from a torn Achilles.

Ohio State junior linebacker Tyler Moeller will miss the 2009 season because of a head injury sustained on a family vacation, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.
Moeller, a projected starter at outside linebacker, was released from OSU Medical Center on Monday and is home in Cincinnati recuperating. A source close to Moeller told ESPN.com the player is doing "extremely well" after undergoing a procedure this weekend to relieve pressure on his brain.

"I'll be responsible for the play calling, how's that?" Spurrier said Sunday.
For many Gamecocks fans, that's just what they wanted to hear.
A season ago, Spurrier's decision to let son Steve Jr. take on more of the game preparation and play calling set off concern the 64-year-old ball coach might be ready to hang up his visor for good. But after another late-season collapse by the Gamecocks in 2008, an overhaul of the coaching staff and a recruiting class that might go down as the school's best ever, Spurrier sounds more energized than ever and ready to put his touch back on South Carolina's offense.

He used to pound lesser teams while at Florida.

Four days into official practice, the Arizona Wildcat football team has yet to answer the questions raised by fans and media.
Where is the linebacker depth? Who's going to start at quarterback?
Both sophomore Matt Scott and redshirt sophomore Nick Foles have been getting nearly equal amount of reps at quarterback. Likewise, they have shared days of struggle and days of success.
On Saturday, the offense sputtered with the two-minute drill and from what the coaches were telling the players on the field, it was clear they were unhappy. But the defense has been living up to expectations of a unit that should return eight starters.
"Shut us up!" defensive players challenged the offense - the offense didn't.
In the second, third and fourth practices, Arizona quarterbacks have gotten picked off. Cornerback Trevin Wade continued to be a ball-hawk Friday, deflecting one pass and intercepting another during the final half-hour of practice

Linebacker is one of ASU’s deepest positions heading into the 2009 season
The biggest question mark on an ASU defense stacked with talent is at safety, as both spots have been vacated by former seniors Troy Nolan and Rodney Cox
Sophomore Clint Floyd, who started two games as a true freshman last season before a lacerated kidney forced him to miss four games, is projected to start at free safety. Senior Ryan McFoy, who is returning to his original position after spending two seasons at linebacker, will likely line up at strong safety.
The entire group of ASU running backs did not perform well in 2008. The Sun Devils ranked 113th out of 119 Division I teams in the nation in rushing yards (89 yards per game).
Seniors Dimitri Nance and Shaun DeWitty have 10 career starts between them, but neither one has had eye-popping success.
ASU has plenty of options in the backfield, but one of those players needs to emerge as the primary ball carrier, because the “running back by committee” strategy hasn’t worked very well in recent years.
Despite a sub-par performance in the spring game, senior Danny Sullivan is expected to enter fall camp as the No. 1 quarterback.
While Sullivan has only completed 45.9 percent of his passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns during his three seasons at ASU, he is also the only eligible Sun Devil on the roster that has taken a snap in college
It’s no secret that many of ASU’s problems on offense in recent years can be traced back to the play of the offensive line.
The Sun Devils gave up 34 sacks in 2008, and while that was a vast improvement over the 55 they allowed the year before, that mark ranked 109th in the nation. The Sun Devils return the majority of their linemen from last year.
ASU is finally starting to develop depth on the offensive line, but the unit is still young and has tons of room to improve in 2009, especially since veterans like quarterback Rudy Carpenter and Herring will no longer be behind those big bodies.

Maybe it was a small sign, but the beleaguered South Carolina offense will take it: It fared well in the Gamecocks’ first scrimmage of the fall.
The passing numbers for the top three quarterbacks were particularly impressive: A combined 22-for-35, 309 passing yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.
“It was one of our typical scrimmages, although I think our offensive guys did a little bit better than most of the scrimmages,” coach Steve Spurrier said.
Starting quarterback Stephen Garcia “threw some good ones here and there” according to Spurrier. The redshirt sophomore was 11-for-15 for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
The running backs had an off night. Starter Brian Maddox only totaled 9 yards six carries, while freshmen Kenny Miles (40 yards on nine carries) and Jarvis Giles (33 yards on 10 carries) fared better. Walk-on Bryce Sherman was the leading rusher (52 yards on nine carries) thanks a long run.
“Other than that, our running game wasn’t as potent as we’re hoping it’s going to be,” Spurrier said. “But that’s OK right now.”
USC line coach backs up warning
If you thought Eric Wolford was merely providing lip service in saying all the offensive line jobs are open, you are mistaken.
Garrett Anderson, the senior center, was demoted Saturday to the second team. The line's only other senior, Lem Jeanpierre, has been running with the first team at center. "He's doing OK," Spurrier said of Jeanpierre, who's coming back from a knee injury. "I guess he's doing better than Garrett. We'll see how it all plays out."
Jarriel King still has the lead at left tackle. Redshirt freshman T.J. Johnson is the leader at right guard. Quintin Richardson has received most of the first-team snaps at right tackle, but Hutch Eckerson isn't too far behind.
Stephon Gilmore is the new starting cornerback for the South Carolina football team. This is the kid whom coach Steve Spurrier said in the spring has a chance to be one of the best players at USC. He was a Parade All-American. He was Mr. Football for the state of South Carolina. As a quarterback and defensive back, he led South Pointe High School to a state championship, along with fellow USC freshman DeVonte Holloman.
Spurrier wants to use Gilmore as the quarterback in the Cocky package of plays.

                                                        Thursday, July 30, 2009
NCSt head football coach Tom O’Brien dropped some surprising – though not entirely unexpected – news: star quarterback Russell Wilson will likely not suit up for the Pack after this season. Several scouts have reported Wilson’s professional career lies in baseball and he will likely declare for the MLB draft next year.
O’Brien also stated that backup Mike Glennon would see some playing time this year in preparation for his new role and will appear in the team’s opening game against South Carolina Sep. 3. This announcement will likely quell rumors that Glennon will transfer in hopes of finding a starting position elsewhere. The plan is to get him in for one or two series during the first half of the opening game against South Carolina.
After spring practice, O’Brien asked his assistant coaches to rank N.C. State’s top 20 players on offense and defense. After O’Brien compiled the aggregate rankings, linebacker Nate Irving, who’s now injured, led the defense followed by end Willie Young.
Irving led the team with four interceptions and made 84 tackles in 2008 despite missing three games with injuries. Sophomore Dwayne Maddox and redshirt freshman Terrell Manning are competing for Irving's spot during training camp.
Wilson was the highest-ranked player on offense. Although Wilson's speed and rushing ability are some of his best attributes, he missed playing time on three occasions last season because of injury. As a result, O'Brien often tells him to slide to avoid dangerous hits when necessary.
Some intense extra work on catching the football might have paid off for wide receiver Owen Spencer.
Spencer was N.C. State's best deep threat last season, with catches of 67, 61, 54, 48 and 44 yards. But he dropped about as many deep balls as he caught. Spencer made it through spring practice with hardly a drop, according to O'Brien.
N.C. State has a strong defensive front but faces questions about who's going to replace Irving and who's going to start at two key positions in the secondary.
Returner T.J. Graham and place-kicker Josh Czajkowski give the Wolfpack two returning special teams standouts
RB Toney Baker, sat out the past two seasons with injuries. He believes that his right-knee problems are over. He said that he still has improvement to make in coming back from so much time away from the game, but is confident that he can be a threat at running back for N.C. State for the first time since 2006, his sophomore season.
O'Brien is encouraged by what he has seen from Baker in early practices. He anticipates that a productive Baker can take a load of defensive pressure off Russell Wilson, the All-ACC quarterback last season as a freshman.
"He ran (Sunday) with a little bit of power and a burst that we hadn't seen in the spring. He's still not all the way back to where he was but he's tracking in that direction, which is good news for our football team."
In 2006 before the injury, Baker led N.C. State with 688 rushing yards. But he finds himself at least behind senior Jamelle Eugene now on the depth chart.

head, I usually hit the conf's official sites. C-USA took some digging and I actually forgot to get it as their site didn't list the media's picks. Did some googlin and came up with this.

This came from the off. site:
The coaches in C-USA say the 2009 season should be similar to 2008. The offenses will continue to produce big plays and big scores and provide plenty of excitement. But in the end, it will be a defense that will win the championship
That philosophy is probably one of the reasons East Carolina is the trendy pick to win the East Division of C-USA, followed by Southern Miss, which closed out the regular-season in 2008 by allowing a total of only 35 points over four games. That's fewer points than some teams scored in a single half last season
The offensive mindset is more pronounced in the West Division, where Tulsa, Rice, Houston and UTEP produced the top four scoring offenses in the conference. The preseason predictions this year keeps those four teams at the top of the division, with Houston commonly picked as the winner followed by Tulsa, UTEP and Rice.
"We're a little bit different styles, East to West," said head coach Mark Snyder of East Division Marshall. "The West side has a little more offense, while the East side has some really good defenses."

                                                              This came from googlin:

East Carolina was predicted to win the East, while Houston was selected to win the West Division. ECU received 20 first-place votes and the Cougars totaled 22 first-place votes. Southern Miss follows ECU in the poll, with Memphis, UCF, Marshall and UAB rounding out the East Division. Tulsa is listed second in the West, followed by UTEP, Rice, SMU and Tulane.
