Another idiot coach calls time out right before opposing kicker misses field goal as time expires. Given a second chance kicker then wins the game. Iowa 27 Pittsburgh 24.

#2Because he knew the kicker would miss the first one? If coach never tries to ice the kicker then he makes it coach is an idiot for not trying to ice him right?Comment -

If a kicker really gets "iced" after a timeout he probably wouldn't be a Division 1 kicker to begin with. Nonetheless, it is a mickey mouse gimmick that rarely works and the rule needs to be changed so a timeout cannot be called after the ball is snapped.Comment -

#4Icing the kicker worked in the Colorado game.
Stupid thread. All coaches try to ice the kicker. You wouldn't be complaining if it worked.Comment -

You are one of the biggest whiners on SBR. Have you dried your tears from the Miami game yet? What a piece of sh*t.Comment -

#6Icing works, coaches should call t.o. right as the kicker is backing up so they can't hike the ball. They just started hiking on timeouts some years ago, didn't use to see that. Should give them a penalty.Comment -

You have no data supporting your statement that "icing works". Guess there is no way to prove it doesn't but I do know most kickers who are good enough to kick for big time college football programs have been kicking so long they've developed the mental toughness to deal with it. Way more can than can't at that level.
Regardless, we agree on the my main point i.e. calling TO's as the ball is snapped is a mickey mouse tactic and shouldn't be allowed. Once upon a time only players on the field could call time outs. Reinstating that rule would likely eliminate the problem.Comment -

Icing a kicker is about throwing off their routine. If it was me, I would ice the kicker sometimes and other times let him kick it just so he wouldn't know what I was going to do.
Now days, I think most kickers plan on getting "iced" so they just wind up and kick it anyway even after the whistle blows. It's kind of like NBA players shooting jump shots after the whistle blows for a foul. Using this logic, it makes sense they wouldn't concentrate as much on the first attempt before the timeout if the're just kicking it as practice attempt. As a result, you may think you see more misses on the first attempt.
Using your logic that kickers are "mentally tough" the timeout then should not bother you because it shouldn't' effect them either way right?
I think when icing the kicker first started it was effective but now it's not because it has become routine for the kickers and isn't a surprise. I saw some statistics somewhere that showed it was effective up until 2011 but since then it has mad no difference. The players have probably adapted just like they're trying to adapt to this sissy rules for hitting too hard.Comment -

Now why didn't you reply with this quality of post to begin with instead of being a jerk? Would have saved a lot of wasted time for each of us.Comment -

#10Good points and I agree with you that the best way to get inside a kicker's head would be to act like you are going to call a time out and then not doing it. Wave for the ref to stand right next to you and make a big show of it and then just let them snap the ball and do nothing. Kicker would probably kick a divot bigger than my wedge shots.

#12unless it is a sudden turnover the kicker is as nervous as hes going to get anyway since he will be anticipating kicking the whole offensive drive already. if you give him a practice kick then your are just helping him out. otherwise i dont think it matters and is just annoying to the viewers.Comment -

#13You can all thank Mike Shanahan for this Mickey Mouse BS. He was the one that started this shit of calling timeout in the middle of the play. It's pathetic just like Shanahan. He used to be my offensive coordinator and is a the biggest lying dick I've ever known.
To me it seems real stupid to give a kicker a practice putt, in order to gauge distance and wind. Just call the timeout before the play which is fair. Doing it during the play is foul which smells of Shanahan.
