    SEC Notebook
For those who are interested in Southeastern Conference football, I'll be posting information regarding teams, coaches and players in this thread. Feel free to add any news or thoughts you might have.

    9 Starters at quarterback return...

The SEC will return a good base of talented quarterbacks for the 2013 season. Nine starters from the 2012 season will be returning under center, provided no one is beaten out. Here's a list of starters returning with last season's passing yards. Also, I've listed the number of offensive line starters returning.

Aaron Murray, (Georgia), 3993 yards, (5 offensive lineman return)
    Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) 3706 yards (3)
Bo Wallace (Ole Miss) 2994 yards (4)
AJ McCarron (Alabama) 2933 yards (2)
Tyler Russell (Miss State) 2897 yards (4)
Zack Mettenberger (LSU) 2609 yards (4)
    Conner Shaw (S. Carolina) 1956 yards (4)
    Jeff Driskel (Florida ) 1646 yards (3)
James Franklin (Missouri) 1562 yards (2)

Vanderbilt (3), Tennessee (4), Arkansas (2) and Auburn (?) will all be starting new quarterbacks.

    * South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney may be the most dominate defensive player in the nation.
    * Alabama's AJ McCarron is playing for a third national championship.
    * Vandy's Jordan Matthews is 812 yards shy of breaking the SEC record for career receiving yards.
    * Georgia's Todd Gurley will prove to be one of the best RB's in the nation.

Manziel will regress and head for the NFL after this season. Watch Gurley at Georgia. HE will be daangerous, especially on draw plays when the opponents are looking at an obvious passing down for UGA.

Yeah BD, Georgia's Gurley and Alabama's Yeldon were both true freshman last year and both rushed for over 1000 yards. Yeldon got his yards as a backup to Eddie Lacy. Both are good kids with talent...the kind of player a coach loves. I look for both players to be really productive this season.

It will be hard for Manziel to dulicate the numbers he put up last year but the kid is a talent. Suicidekings has a pretty good read on Texas A&M and he thinks the offensive line has a chance to be pretty good again this season.

          Auburn Quarterbacks.....

Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace have split reps with the first and second units on a random basis thoughout the spring. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee all but guaranteed a starter would not be named in the spring and for good reason with JUCO transfer Nick Marshall, Alabama's Mr. Football Jeremy Johnson and recruit Jason Smith arriving in the summer. My guess is Marshall will get a strong look come fall.

          Missouri Offensive Line....

Countless bad snaps, 29 sacks allowed and injuries to the quarterback made 2012 a forgettable one for the Tiger offensive line. This spring, the line has been reshuffled for 2013, with the biggest change coming at center. Sophomore Evan Boehm (6-3,315) has made the transition from guard to center, where he started all 12 games last season as a true freshman. Boehm's presence at center has resulted in a noticeable improvement in the snaps from the shotgun. The rest of the offensive line is a work in progress. Senior Justin Britt (6-6, 320), Soph Connor McGovern (6-4, 315), Sr Max Copeland (6-3, 300), and Jr Mitch Morse (6-5, 305) have joined Boehm on either side of the Tigers first team offensive line.

          Florida Tailbacks....

Freshman Matt Jones (6-2, 226) had an excellent spring and has distanced himself from the other tailbacks according to head coach Will Muschamp. Jones is the clear No. 1 guy heading into the 2013 season. The defense has had a hard time tackling the big, fast Jones all spring and his blocking improvement has been a pleasant surprise. True freshman Kevin Taylor (5-11, 215) has also impressed Muschamp with vision and quick cutting ability. Another surprise has been walk-on Mark Herndon (5-9, 196) who has contributed at tailback and special teams. Muschamp has been searching for a big, pounding back and now he has one in Jones.

          LSU Quarterback....

Senior quarterback Zack Mettenberger was somewhat of a disappointment last year. He's hoping to make good on a promise to be more productive during his final season with the Tigers. Mettenberger has all the receivers back from last year, a strong offensive line and a good running game to lean on. His receivers do need to run better routes and be more consistent catching the ball than they were during 2012. For some reason, I have my doubts about Mettenberger. He just doesn't seem like a good leader to me. Guess we shall see.

Agreed on the leadership element. He seems to be a bit lacking. However in his defense, he was victimized pretty badly by dropped passes from multiple receivers, most notably Odell Beckham. The 59% passing rate from last year should improve quite a bit, so 2013 should be a much better season for him, at least in terms of his personal stats.

For Florida, if Jones proves to be as good as he appears, it will be huge for them to have a tailback of that size available when they've been somewhat undersized in the Gillislee/Rainey/Demps era. Driskel desperately needs a good blocking RB he can rely on to handle the premier pass rushers and buy time for the speed at WR to get open downfield.

Sucide, it's obvious to this old college football lover that you have some smarts with the college game. Guess I have two questions for you if I'm not being to nosey. Have you been a coach...and what state are you from?

SBR can be the 'BEST' college football forum on the net with guys like you, Bigdaddy, LouisvilleKid and others if we all provide good, solid football information and not "kitty litter".

Hopefully, whoever the CFB mod here is will keep the focus on COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

No coaching experience. Only one year playing in my HS senior year, which only happened because our rugby program had fallen on hard times.

In truth, I only really developed the love of college football in the last few years. I'm Canadian, living in Vancouver, and football just doesn't have the following here that it does in the States. The CFL is terrible, and hockey is practically religion. I came into CFB backwards, through sports betting, looking for new markets to work in. Since then, it's become my favourite sport both to watch and to bet as it just offers so much. The game really matches up well with my style of betting.

This is a great time of year to be having these conversations. No clutter in the forum from fools asking if their 5 team parlays look like winners, and so many decisions being made by HCs & ADs that will really define the structure and style of the teams for the year before personal stats and media hype start to skew our perspective.

I'm really optimistic about TCU and Texas this season in the Big 12. Last season, Kansas State and Oklahoma really ran away with the conference, but I project both to take a significant downturn this season.

Oklahoma: The Sooners are going to have a hard time winning games in 2013 with Blake Bell under center and losing a lot of senior leadership on both sides of the ball. Their spring game appears to have been played at a very low level and it looks like Stoops has a lot of work to do if he hopes to field a competitive team this season.

                  Kansas State:
While in a much better position than the Sooners, has still been living above their means recently. Collin Klein's departure will be very disruptive to the Wildcats offense, despite him not being an elite QB prospect. He's a grinder that got the job done and was well equipped to perform at the college level, executing the zone-read to perfection and capitalizing on a conference that largely builds their defense around defending against big offensive plays, prioritizing passing over short gains. The one really positive thing I can say about their offense is John Hubert is a legit playmaker that will be a significant weapon for them in 2013, but I suspect they'll be walking into most games outgunned.

TCU: The Horned Frogs had a tough time last year with injuries and Pachall's off-field issues. I'm actually stoked for this team in their second year in the Big 12. Their defense is poised to be the best in the conference and their fate really lies with the return of Casey Pachall. He came into the spring behind schedule but he still represents a much better option than Boykin as the #1 QB, and if he can bring the level of play he showed early in the 2012 season, he could be the best QB in the newly depleted B12. LSU will be a real test in Week 1, and I'm hoping that the challenge spurs a solid effort to come into the 2013 season playing at a high level.

Texas: Texas is peaking at exactly the right time. Their performance last year was solid for the most part, but they REALLY struggled in the quality of their tackling. Taking bad lines, failing to wrap up, and giving up on plays had them getting raped by opponents offenses far too often. It was really odd to see a Mack Brown team being so inconsistent, even considering their youth, and I suspect that we'll see a more confident defensive squad on the field this year. David Ash is set to compete with Pachall for the top QB in the conference and has a solid supporting cast to move the ball.

Overall, the B12 is going to be a lot more competitive this year as the playing field has levelled quite a bit from recent years. Baylor should continue to be a tough opponent even without Nick Florence, bulding on their improved defensive second half in 2012, and OK State is loaded with young talent that could develop a lot this season. Despite the heavy turnover of perennial stars, this is a conference that draws a lot of talented recruits every year and even if the polish won't be there, the conference will still be an exciting one.

Mr. S, I appreciate your input here on the forum...you offer some good insites on the college game.

Other than football...hockey is my favorite sport. Lived in Atlanta when the Flames came to town and bought season tickets and have been hooked ever since. I got to know many of the Falcon and Braves players but those hockey guys were the friendliest of the bunch. Willie Plett was one of my favorites; he came in a hockey player but developed into one of the toughest enforcers in the league.

                    ....now back to college football!

Saban Sizes up Bama Spring Game.....

The mood Nick Saban found himself experiencing after Saturday's turnover-filled, back-and-forth A-Day game was nothing new. It was right on par with how the coach always feels this time of year.

"I wasn't happy with any of my teams at this point," Saban said. "If I was happy with them, we wouldn't have summer conditioning, we would not have fall camp, we wouldn't have 30 practices to get ready for our first game against Virginia Tech. We'd just pack it in and say, 'All right, let's go to Atlanta and play the game.' We're not there yet. I'm not disappointed in where we are right now. I don't want anybody to think that. But I'm not satisfied with were we are either. We have a high standard of what we want to do here at Alabama."

How Alabama responds from its 15 practices over the next four month will ultimately determine Saban's mood when the games start to count. I'm thinking the the high standard certaintly didn't include the combine 9 turnovers and 7 penalties that occurred in Saturday's scrimmage.

Anyone think the Bama coaches want use the game as a motivating tool during the offseason...I'm betting it's a lock!

                        Alabama Offensive Line....

The Crimson Tide lost 3 starters from last season's offensive line...all 3 are projected to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. This spring, there has been an emphasis to find new replacements. With spring drills now in the book, the line has begun to take shape. If Bama opened the season tomorrow...these 5 players would be the starters.

                        LT: Cyrus Kouandjio (6-6, 325)
                        LG: Arie Kouandjio (6-5, 320)
                        C : Ryan Kelly (6-5, 287)
                        RG: Anthony Steen (6-3, 310)
                        RT: Austin Shepherd (6-5, 325)
                        TE: Brian Vogler (6-7, 260)

Cyrus Kouandjio and Austin Shepherd were starters last year. JUCO transfer Leon Brown could push out Shepherd at right tackle. Both will probably get playing time.

With a proven winning quarterback and great depth and talent at running back and receiver...I got to think this will be one good offense. The O-line will need to jell early, but with the physical ability and talent available...it shouldn't be a problem

Athlon Ranks SEC QBs for 2013

The SEC should be one of college football's top conferences for quarterback play in 2013. Along with a Heisman Trophy winner, eight other QBs return as starters. This is just a ranking of projected starters by Athlon; no backups were included.

                          1. Johnny Manziel (So, Texas A&M) Last year: 3706 passing, 26 touchdowns...1410 rushing, 21 TDs.
                          2. AJ MaCarron (Sr, Alabama) Last year: 2933 passing, 30 TDs, 3 INTs. Only 8 ints in last 690 passes.
                          3. Aaron Murray (Sr, Georgia) Needs 1500 passing yards and 19 TDs to become SEC career leader.
                          4. Connor Shaw (Sr, South Carolina) Injury prong but 17-3 as a starter.
                          5. Tyler Russell (Sr, Miss State) Last season passed for 24 TDs...needs big year for Dogs to be successful.
                          6. Bo Wallace (Jr, Ole Miss) Last year passed for 2994 yards and 22 TDs...missed spring with shoulder surgery.
                          7. Zack Mettenberger (Sr, LSU) Last year passed for 2609 yards and 12 touchdowns.
                          8. Jeff Driskel (Jr, Florida) Needs to play more consistent...clear cut No. 1 quarterback entering season.
                          9. James Franklin (Sr, Missouri) Last year slowed by shoulder and knee injuries.
                          10. Austyn Carta-Samuels (Sr, Vanderbilt) Transfer from Wyoming.
                          11. Jalen Whitlow (So, Kentucky) The dual threat QB is in battle with Maxwell Smith.
                          12. Justin Worley (Jr, Tennessee) Solid arm and some experience playing behind Tyler Bray.
                          13. Brandon Allen (So, Arkansas) Made one start last season for injured Tyler Wilson.
                          14. Kiehl Fraizer (Jr, Auburn) Last year passed for 753 yards, 2 TDs and 8 ints.

Again, this is how the publication rated each teams quarterback.

Wallace certainly outplayed Frazier in the spring game. I think the battle will go into fall with
the JUCO transfer getting a good look. Auburn needs to come up with a productive quarterback.

                                  Arkansas quarterback....

With spring practice at an end, it looks like Arkansas has settled on a starting quarterback. Head coach Bret Bielema said Brandon Allen all through spring made good progress and the last few weeks had been exceptional. He looks to have beaten out Brandon Mitchell for the starting QB positioon. Allen did a better job of not turning the ball over and not causing negative plays according to Bielema. Allen, a sophomore from Fayetteville now goes into fall as the number one guy.

                                  Florida secondary (safety report)

In an attempt to get the best players on the field, Will Muschamp moved cornerbacks Jaylen Watkins and Conly Riggs to safety, and both have performed at a high level and likely will be the starters at the two safety positions come fall. They help bring versatility to the secondary, which should be the strength of the defense.

Depth Chart: Jaylen Watkins, Jabari Gorman, Valdez Showers
Depth Chart: Cody Riggs, Marcus Mage, Marcell Harris

                                      What about Tennessee in 2013....

The Volunteers have missed out on a bowl game in each of the last 2 years and have just 2 conference wins during that stretch. New coach Butch Jones has done a good job his previous 2 stops, going 27-13 at Central Michigan and 23-14 at Cincinnati.

No doubt the goal of Jones in his first year is a bowl game. Welcoming Jones during his first year is an overall brutal schedule, with road games in back-to-back weeks to Oregon and Florida followed by the difficult stretch of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. Those 5 alone should keep Jones up at night.

Despite a difficult schedule with some hugh obstacles, there are things to like about the Vols in 2013. Tennessee will have one of the SEC's best offensive lines. The ability to run the ball and protect the QB should aid a new starter at the QB position.

Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, South Alabama, Auburn and Kentucky are all winnable games leaving a home game with Vanderbilt, and a road trip to Missouri to determine bowl eligibility.

I really don't understand how Tyler Bray went undrafted this year. His departure along with Hunter and Corradelle is pretty significant for the Vols offense. Bray's replacement has yet to be named, and Worley and Peterman offer very little as starters, in my opinion. From what I've seen Josh Dobbs could be a much better answer, even if he's only a freshman. As a dual threat QB, I think it makes a lot of sense to lean towards him from the start. As you say, the Vols OL is going to be very solid again, offering great protection. From everything I've read and the video I just watched, Dobbs is extremely comfortable and confident working from the pocket, stepping up as needed and not afraid to take the gaps the defense gives him.

He's clearly a pass-first QB with good wheels, and he reminds me of Kaepernick & Russell Wilson. The loss of their two big WRs will be less of a problem with a QB that can gain yardage with his legs as well as sitting back and throwing. Added to that, the kid is taking aerospace engineering at UT and you can't teach intelligence.

I believe most teams thought Tyler Bray needed a 'check up from the neck up.'

SEC Dominates first three rounds of draft.....

Twelve SEC players were taken in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Another eight were taken in the second round and twelve more were taken in round three. The SEC can claim 32 of 97 players taken in the first three rounds. That's basically one out of three coming from America's best football conference. Here's how the SEC stacks up to other power conferences (first three rounds).

                                              SEC = 32
                                              ACC = 12
                                              Pac 12 = 11
                                              Big 12 = 8
                                              Big East = 8
                                              Big Ten =7

Sidenote: Bear Bryant produced 13 first-round picks in his 25 seasons at Alabama. Nick Saban now has 14 first rounders in 6 seasons. Actually 5 seasons as Alabama did not have a player drafted his first year (Shula recruits).

Bray has signed with the Chiefs as a free agent, and Jordan Rodgers has signed with the Jags. Onterio McCalebb to the Bengals. About a dozen more SEC players also signed with various teams, but no one else really noteworthy.

                                                    Running back suspended.....

LSU's starting tailback Jeremy Hill was suspended indefinitely on Monday by Tiger head coach Les Miles, and his future with the program is very much in doubt. According to the Baton Rouge newspaper The Advocate, Hill was arrested and charged with misdemeaner simple battery after a fight broke out at a local bar that left one victim unconscious. Hill reportedly punched a man from behind in the side of the head.

Before the lastest incident, he pleaded guilty to carnal knowledge of a juvenile in January 2012 and receive a six month suspended sentence and two years probation. Since he could be in violation of his probation if found guilty, that very much puts his future in doubt.

The SEC did very well is a rather poor draft when it came to quality. I will be shocked if 25% of these latyers taken are around in 5 years from now. It also means that a lot of conferences, especially the Pac 12, will be loaded this season.

                                                          Kyle Field Expanding.........

According to multiple reports, Texas A&M plans to expand its football stadium to 102,000. Kyle Field currently holds 82,589 which would mean a 25% bounce in capacity if the reports are right. At 102,000, Texas A&M's stadium would challenge Tennessee's Neyland Stadium for the title of largest in the conference. Neyland Stadium currently holds 102,455 while Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium hold 101,821. The projected cost is listed at $450 million. Looks like the Aggies have turned out to be a good fit for the SEC on and off the field.

Looks like ESPN's "College Gameday" will be at the opening game for old rivals Georgia and Clemson. The August 31 matchup has already been slotted into ABC's primetime broadcast. Both teams have a chance to be a force in each of their respective conferences.

Daneblazer, I agree that South Carolina, as far comparing all SEC teams has one of the easier schedules. Alabama and Texas A&M probably rank least difficult. Don't get me wrong...none of the SEC schedules are easy but I agree SC gets a break this year in the SEC.

Home: Florida, Kentucky, Miss St., Vanderbilt

                                                                  Other: North Carolina, Clemson

Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Miss St. and Florida have the tough ones. Auburn, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss are not far behind.

Alabama basically has a two game schedule on their way to the SEC championship game. At Texas A&M and home against LSU. No guarantees but schedule is certainly in the Tides favor for another title run.

Four-star recruit Alex Collins (5-11, 210) was one of the top catches in Bret Bielema's first recruiting class with the Razorbacks. The Florida native ranked as one of the top backs in the country and had offers from Florida, Florida State and Miami. Collins will compete with Jonathan Williams for the starting job this fall. Many believe Collins will become the featured back in Bielema's run heavy offense early in the season. Certainly a newcomer to watch for this year's Razorback team.

The 6-3, 245 pounder is a load for opposing defenses and is expected to factor into Bama's backfield this season. Last year he rushed for 4,261 yards and 55 touchdowns as a senior at Yulea, Florida. Henry finished his career with 12,124 yards, which broke the national high school rushing record set back in 1950-53. He was rated a five-star recruit by Scout and a 4-star by rivals. Another big, strong, pounding back for Alabama's already talented backfield.

Tre Mason is Auburn's number one running back heading into the fall, but Artis-Payne wasn't brought in to sit on the bench. The 5-11, 210 pound Payne was rated the top junior college running back recruit and made quite an impression this spring, which included 117 yards rushing in the A-Day Game. At 210 pounds, Payne brings impressive power to the backfield and will be counted on to serve as someone who can share the load with Mason. Artis-Payne rushed for 2,048 yards and 25 touchdowns in ten game last season. He was rated a four-star recruit by Rivals and is a welcome addition for the Tigers.

More than four months after Clowney looked briefly as though he had separated the head of Michigan running back Vincent Smith from his body, its still rippling through the sports world and on YouTube. The play has already taken its place at the top of South Carolina football lore. The question is, what can Clowney do for an encore? He could have been the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft and is the favorite to go No. 1 next year. The only thing he hasn't done is lead the Gamecocks to their first conference title since Paul Dietzel's 1969 team won the ACC title. All SEC...All-American...and probable Heisman Trophy candidate...the dude is a Stud!

How about something that's never been done. McCarron can lead his team to a third straight national title. The nation's most efficient quarterback, McCarron will have his favorite receivers back this season. Sophomore Amari Cooper (1,000 yards, 11 touchdowns) and senior Kevin Norwood (461 yards, 4 touchdowns). Last season McCarron passed for 2933 yards with 30 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. For his career, he has thrown for 5956 yards, 49 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions. Baring injury this season, McCarron will leave Alabama with almost all career passing records.
