Yeah, you can claim losses to offset the wins, if you file as a professional you basically just sum them up on schedule C. If you file as a hobbyist, you cannot sum them, you're supposed to declare each session individually and then declare the losses as a deduction. So, for a reasonable size poker player or sportsbetting hobbyist, with $10,000/yr in income you may have to claim $1,000,000 as winnings and then take $990,000 as deductions, which causes a mess of problems.

Yeah, I take every deduction afforded to me. All my traveling expenses, home office expense, internet, cell phone, books, everything. You can deduct down to 0, just can't go lower than that like you can with a normal business.

And people DO pick up losing tickets for tax purposes.

Right, but it all goes into the same pot. If I move into a place where I save 50% of my income in taxes, but then I spend twice as much for a loaf of bread, I've at least broken even. More, if I'm still earning more than I spend every month.
