    How to explain OPS?

I get that OPS is on base + slugging, but a friend asked me what it really means if the value is over 1? Like Babe Ruth had an OPS of 1.1636, does that mean he gets on base 1.1636 times per at bat?

I know that makes no sense but I have no idea how to explain it lol.

OPS is just a sum of two numbers. not very easy to understand.
I find wOBA(weighted OBP) or tAvg(weighted AVG, basically the same stat, just scaled differently) much easier to understand for new baseball fans. They're probably easier to understand than AVG as well, which I think is a very confusing and meaningless stat.
