The Pirates aren't going to pay a closer the amount of money that the top closers ask for. There was zero chance that Melancon was going to be back with the Bucs next year. Good move by them to get a decent arm back and a decent prospect for a guy who pitches one inning every few nights.

I get dealing melancon but they should have aimed higher than a dime a dozen reliever and the Nats 27th ranked prospect

It did make sense for both teams IMO.

Pirates get a guy they have til 2021 (who could be pretty good isn't really right now) plus an a guy (too early to tell but good so far). Melancon was done here anyways.

Nationals needed a closer, they got one the best.
