In hot pursuit of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Red Wings host the New York Rangers on Thursday. Here is sports betting analyst Scott Cullen's top NHL pick for the showdown based on the best NHL odds.

The Red Wings have won six of their past seven games to pull to within two points of the Florida Panthers for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The math works well for Detroit, too, as it has four games in hand on the Panthers.

The Rangers lost at home against Winnipeg on Monday, ending an 8-0-2 stretch.

Here is our best Rangers vs. Red Wings NHL pick (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Rangers vs. Red Wings pick

Rangers 60-minute ML (+100 via DraftKings)

The New York Rangers travel well.

In addition to their recent overall surge, the Rangers have been crushing it in on the road. Their 17-5-5 record away from Madison Square Garden ties them for the fourth-best road points percentage (.722) in the NHL.

On top of that, 15 of the Rangers' 17 road wins have come in regulation, which is why I'm taking the 60-minute value play.

Part of the reason for the Rangers' road dominance has been the play of goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who has a .922 save percentage with 10.83 goals saved above expected in 16 away games.

Even though the Red Wings are climbing in the standings, they have shaky underlying numbers. They are under 46% of score-and-venue-adjusted shot attempts and expected goals during five-on-five play, ranking 28th and 27th, respectively, while the Rangers are closer to league average in the 50-51% range.

As well as the Wings have been playing, this is a tough test against a superior Rangers squad that has made opposing fan bases miserable on a nightly basis.

There is a notable range in the 60-minute moneyline price for the Rangers among our top-rated sportsbooks. DraftKings is the best on the board, still offering the Blueshirts at even money, while FanDuel is close behind at -102.

BetMGM, PointsBet, and Caesars all have less appealing numbers on the board and it shows just how important it is to shop for the best price. Paying -112 at Caesars for a wager that can be had for even money at DraftKings is sacrificing a significant edge.
