The Florida Panthers hope to break out of their recent funk as they head north of the border to take on the Edmonton Oilers. Here are our best Panthers-Oilers NHL picks and predictions.

It’s all hands on deck for the Florida Panthers as they currently sit fifth in the Atlantic Division — two points out of the playoff picture. A combination of injuries and poor goaltending has played a large role in this result. Florida has managed to stay competitive due to a high shot volume and consistent scoring.

The Edmonton Oilers are in a similar boat, but it feels a little better given they’re in the first Wild Card spot. Like Florida, goaltending is a problem, however, both teams have a younger goalie who has fared better than the usual starter. Will this backstop matchup end up being the main story?

Here are our Panthers-Oilers NHL picks for Monday (odds via BetRivers and DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Panthers vs. Oilers Odds

Panthers vs. Oilers Odds Analysis

The total opened up at 7 before dipping to its current line of 6.5 as of Monday afternoon, with 58% of the tickets and 86% of the cash pulling for the Over. For those who wish to play the Under, FanDuel is your best bet as their total for this market is still 7.

The Oilers opened as -110 moneyline favorites, but the spread has since changed to pick ’em odds for both teams overnight. Edmonton’s odds haven’t shifted too dramatically, with -108 at BetRivers currently being the best value.

  • Prop: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 power-play points (+160 via DraftKings)

Panthers vs. Oilers Moneyline Pick

Panthers (-108) ★★★★

There are a lot of similarities between the Panthers and the Oilers. Both are contending for a Wild Card spot within their respective conferences, with a roster featuring a potent offense led by a pair of superstars. Unfortunately, both also have a middling defense and a goaltending situation that is often a coin-flip on any given night.

When these teams met earlier this month, Edmonton had the last laugh in a 4-2 victory. It wasn’t exactly a cake walk, however, as Oilers rookie netminder Stuart Skinner had to make 40 saves. This time, Skinner won’t get that chance as goalie Jack Campbell is projected to start. Unlike his crease counterpart, Campbell’s season has been disastrous so far,  including 21 goals against in his last five contests.

There’s far more value in taking the Panthers to win outright, considering they average over 40 shots per game and will likely be aggressive in this matchup.

Panthers vs. Oilers O/U Pick

Over 6.5 (-120) ★★★★★

Taking the Over seems like a no-brainer in this situation. Both squads are averaging well over three goals per game, while also yielding roughly the same. Each team has also been fairly solid on the power play, with Edmonton especially dominating that category, converting at a 30.7% clip (23 total power-play goals).

Opportunities won’t be in short supply either, considering these teams have combined to rack up 400-plus penalty minutes this season. The Panthers are likely to start backstop Spencer Knight, who has been far better than highly-paid veteran starter Sergei Bobrovsky.

Still, this is a matchup where Florida could score seven on its own, and solid goaltending also doesn’t make up for the defensive woes this team has demonstrated up to this point. In short, this tilt will be anything but a defense display.

Panthers vs. Oilers Prop Pick

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 power-play points (+160) ★★★★★

The odds for this prop present fantastic value, given the likelihood of it smashing. As previously noted, the Oilers score on nearly a third of their power-play chances, a percentage that only trails the Colorado Avalanche. Forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has the best possible situation, playing with arguably the best player (Connor McDavid) and the best power-play player (Leon Draisaitl) in the NHL.

Nuge’s numbers have definitely reflected this so far, as 10 of his 12 assists have come while up a man. To make matters more enticing, the Panthers are a bottom-10 penalty killing team. There aren’t many factors working against the Over of this prop market, and it should be taken advantage of before the line shifts.
