My Islanders vs. Capitals player props are banking on Washington rookie Ryan Leonard to capitalize on his first-line opportunity as one of my three NHL best bets for tonight’s clash from Capital One Arena in Washington at 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network).
Washington is a -225 betting favorite over New York, which has allowed 15 goals during a three-game losing streak. I'm also targeting a struggling Bo Horvat and backing a bounce-back effort from Mathew Barzal.

Horvat is the Islanders’ season leader in shots on goal (35), but that statistic is misleading. After racking up 23 shots in his first four games, Horvat has mustered just 12 in six games since, and half of those came in one outing.
With the Isles playing the second night of a back-to-back and the Capitals among the top defensive teams in the NHL, I don’t expect that trend to change tonight. DraftKings’ -105 odds suggest a 51.22% chance that Horvat goes Under 2.5 shots, returning $9.52 profit on a $10 bet.

One Islander who won’t be feeling the fatigue of back-to-back games is Barzal, who was a healthy scratch last night against the Carolina Hurricanes after being late to a morning skate.
I’m hoping that serves as a wake-up call for the veteran center, who has recorded just seven shots in New York’s last six games. Despite his lack of individual scoring chances, Barzal has still been contributing to the scoresheet, collecting at least a point in six of his last seven outings.
FanDuel’s -130 odds were the best available from our best sports betting sites, compared to -142 at DraftKings and -143 at Caesars. A winning $10 bet at FanDuel would net $7.69 in profit with an implied probability of 56.52%.

🔥 Ryan Leonard anytime goal scorer (+295) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Leonard was promoted to Washington’s first line Tuesday against the Dallas Stars and could have the chance to skate with Alex Ovechkin and Connor McMichael once again if Dylan Strome is still sidelined by a lower body injury.
Although Leonard and his entire team were held off the scoresheet versus the Stars, I think his chances of finding the net tonight are better than DraftKings’ +295 odds imply. The rookie has collected points in four of the Capitals’ last five games, and he leads the team in shots on goal per 60 minutes, per Moneypuck.
A $10 bet at DraftKings can return $29.50 profit, with the +295 odds suggesting a 25.32% probability.
