The Avalanche and Hurricanes clash for the second time in less than a week after Colorado beat Carolina 4-1 at home on Saturday. Here are our Avalanche-Hurricanes NHL picks and predictions for Thursday.

The Avalanche hit the road after a successful homestand. The Avs are beat up a little bit and off to a slower start than expected at 8-5-1 (4-3-0 on the road).

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes are returning home following a short road trip. They returned to the win column in Chicago, and the Canes are now 10-5-1 on the season (4-2-0 at home).

Here are my NHL picks and predictions for Thursday’s Avalanche-Hurricanes matchup (odds via BetRivers, DraftKings Sportsbook, and FanDuel Sportsbook; Pick confidence is based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Avalanche vs. Hurricanes Moneyline Pick

Hurricanes (-125) ★★★★

The Hurricanes are off to a strong start despite playing some tough opponents. They’ve lost three of their last five games, but those defeats were against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, and Colorado Avalanche, three Stanley Cup hopefuls.

Colorado has won four of its past seven games. But the Avs just lost to the Blues at home and previously to the Devils and Islanders on the road.

Carolina boasts a second-best 59.57% xGF, while Colorado is in the bottom-third at 47.26%. Goaltending is even, with a slight lean to the Avs, who are projected to start Alexandar Georgiev (7-2-1, 2.70 goals-against average, .924 save percentage) against Antti Raanta (3-2-1, 2.47 GAA, .911 SV%).

The Hurricanes should be able to get some revenge for Saturday’s loss on home ice. The Avs are hurting, with Samuel Girard questionable, and Bo Byram, Gabriel Landeskog, and Valeri Nichushkin are out for a while.

Avalanche vs. Hurricanes O/U Pick

Under 6 (-105) ★★★★

There should be a playoff-like atmosphere in a game between the reigning Stanley Cup champions and one of the Eastern Conference's best teams. The two squads played to a 4-1 final on Saturday, which has been a theme for both squads recently.

The Under has hit during three of Colorado's past four games and seven of the team's previous 10. Carolina is right there as well, with the Under cashing in two of its last three and four of its previous five.

Those trends plus the strong goaltending should make this another low-scoring contest.

Avalanche vs. Hurricanes Prop Pick

Burns Over 0.5 power-play points (+160) ★★★

Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns quarterbacks the top power-play unit and has recorded a point with the man advantage in seven of 16 games in 2022-23. Colorado's penalty kill is one of the league's worst while producing a 72% success rate.

The Avs have allowed a power-play goal in 11 of their 14 games. The Canes didn’t get one on Saturday, but they were given five chances.

Expect Burns and the Canes to strike on the power play at home against a shaky penalty-kill unit.
