Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has set all kinds of passing records in his first two seasons. He now looks to translate those individual achievements into team success, as the Chargers have made the playoffs just once in the last eight seasons. Check out the Chargers' futures odds, picks, and preview for the upcoming season.
The Chargers broke a two-year drought without a winning record as they rebounded to finish 9-8 in 2022. Los Angeles had a chance to earn a playoff spot in Week 18 against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the Raiders prevailed 35-32 in overtime in one of the most thrilling regular-season games, sending the Chargers home again. They haven't reached the playoffs since 2018.
Below, we preview the 2022 season for the Los Angeles Chargers with a look at their futures odds and make our top picks (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook).

Chargers and Chiefs both to make the playoffs (+160)
Even though the Kansas City Chiefs lost Tyreek Hill, their most dynamic offensive skill player, they're hard to bet against to win the division as long as head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are there. The Chiefs and Denver Broncos have won the last 11 AFC West titles. Meanwhile, the Chargers' last division crown came in 2009.
However, if you're high on Los Angeles like me, the team's +160 odds to make the playoffs along with Kansas City is a solid bet. It could cash even if the Chargers don't unseat the Chiefs for the division title.
While most sportsbooks don't let you parlay two teams' odds to make the playoffs, you can find this wager at DraftKings under "Playoff Parlays."
Over 9.5 Wins (-145)
For Los Angeles to hit the Over on this projected total, it needs to be one win better than the club's 9-8 record in 2021. The Chargers won nine games despite a defense that couldn't stop anybody. Their defense ranked 30th in rushing yards allowed, as it allowed opposing teams to convert 49.5% of third-down attempts (the league's worst rate).
To remedy that problem, Los Angeles traded for Khalil Mack, signed the best cornerback on the market in J.C. Jackson, and beefed up its defensive line with the additions of Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson.
With a more balanced and deeper defense, the Chargers should be a vastly improved team in 2022.

Chargers to be the highest-scoring regular-season team (+800)
Los Angeles produced the league's fifth-ranked scoring offense in 2021 at 27.9 points per game. But the Chargers should take the next step to boast the highest-scoring offense now during Justin Herbert's third year under center.
Herbert registered the third-highest total QBR in 2021 (third in the NFL), and he threw for 5,014 yards with 38 touchdowns. He plays for a head coach in Brandon Staley who's one of the most aggressive play-callers and isn't afraid to go for it on fourth down. Los Angeles became the first team in 30 years to convert six fourth-down attempts in a game last season. Additionally, Los Angeles is a warm-climate city, and the weather doesn't affect the squad's offense as much.
A better Chargers defense should also help the offense, as the team won't lose the time of possession battle as often. With the ball in his hands more, Herbert will lead his offense to its highest heights.
Herbert to win MVP (+1000)
Herbert has set countless records through his first two seasons. He owns the record for most touchdown passes (69) and passing yards (9,350) of any quarterback in their first two seasons, and the signal-caller has also posted the most single-season passing touchdowns in franchise history (38). Herbert notched nine 300-plus-yard passing games in 2021 (another team record), and the club went 8-0 when he produced a passer rating of 100 or better.
He has an abundance of skill players to support him. In addition, rookie offensive lineman Rashawn Slater finished last season with the best pass block win rate, and the team also drafted Zion Johnson to fortify the offensive line.
Herbert is drawing the most money to take home the MVP Award, according to Max Meyer of Caesars Sportsbook. The award might be his if he leads the team to its first division title in 13 seasons.
