Redblacks vs. Argonauts Prediction, Odds & CFL Best Bets: Aug. 9

Two of the worst teams in the CFL meet on Saturday, but could this be a sneaky explosive offensive game?

The struggling defending champion Toronto Argonauts host one of their biggest rivals, the Ottawa Redblacks, today at 3 p.m. ET (TSN/RDS, CTV, CBSSN) from BMO Field. While neither of these teams looks like a Grey Cup odds contender, my Redblacks vs. Argonauts prediction expects this to be a high-scoring shootout.

Although the Redblacks are coming off a 31-11 win against the Calgary Stampeders, this team is hard to trust. Both its wins this season have come against Calgary, and the Argos already beat Ottawa in Week 4, 29-16. Confidently backing either squad is a tough ask, but Toronto's home-field advantage could be the difference.

It certainly helps the Argos' cause that the Redblacks' pass defense is shaky, and Toronto receiver Damonte Coxie has been the most unstoppable pass catcher in the league thus far. Given Toronto's more consistent offense, my Redblacks vs. Argonauts prediction projects a 30-27 win for Ryan Dinwiddie's squad.

Dru Brown and Nick Arbuckle are far from the best QBs in the league, but neither is afraid to let it rip. It's a huge reason why Arbuckle is second in the CFL in touchdown passes (13) and passing yards (2,334), while Brown is averaging 260.6 passing yards per game and ranks third in the league in completion rate (72.6%). The last time the Redblacks and Argos played, Brown was hurt, but this time, Ottawa should be able to keep pace with their QB1 back.

Toronto is 3-2-1 betting the Over since Week 3, and a huge piece of that has been its poor defensive play. The Argos have given up at least 26 points in six of eight games this season, including allowing 40-plus in two of their last four. This is one of the worst defenses in the CFL, allowing the second-most points per game (30.8), and Brown can expose it with Eugene Lewis and Kalil Pimpleton.

But the Redblacks' defense isn't much better; it's allowed 29-plus points in five games this season. It's not well equipped to slow Arbuckle and his plethora of playmakers. It's not just Coxie who's a hard cover, as Toronto has five receivers with 250-plus yards this season, and four of them are top 30 in the league in yards. Expect plenty of passing and points in this matchup.

This line could be as high as 80.5 receiving yards across the best sports betting apps in Canada, and I'd still take the Over. Nobody in the CFL can cover Coxie right now, as he leads the league in receiving yards (774) by a wide margin after going for 332 over his last two games.

The Memphis product has topped 72.5 receiving yards in six of eight games this season, including popping off for 82 yards on just two receptions the last time he played Ottawa.
