Rangers vs. Mets Prediction, Odds & Expert Picks: MLB Best Bets for Sept. 12

Our Rangers vs. Mets prediction suggests backing Texas as a road underdog and Jacob deGrom to deal in his return to Citi Field.

In a game with playoff implications, my Rangers vs. Mets prediction is banking on Texas earning a pivotal win. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET on Friday at Citi Field on MLB Network.

The Rangers are two games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League, while the Mets are holding onto a 1.5-game lead for the No. 6 seed in the National League. New York is a slight -118 favorite at home, suggesting value on the road underdog for Friday’s MLB picks.

In addition, I like backing Texas right-hander Jacob deGrom in his first start at Citi Field since 2022.

🔥 Rangers to win (-102) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Starting with the most critical factor, the Rangers should be the favorites in this game. Ballpark Pal’s model projects a 52.8% chance of victory, suggesting a fair price of -112. I’ll gladly take the -102 price tag, cashing a profit of $9.80 on a $10 bet.

With that out of the way, allow me to focus on the narrative aspect: There is no way I’m passing up the opportunity to back Jacob deGrom in this spot. He’s returning to the place where he spent the first nine years of his MLB career.

So far this season, deGrom is 11-7 with a 2.78 ERA in 27 starts. He’s given up only eight earned runs across his past 27 innings, so I’ll bank on him maintaining that form against a New York team that has lost six straight games.

⬆️ Jacob deGrom Over 15.5 outs (+110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m counting on some adrenaline and familiarity helping deGrom stay in the game to record an extra out or two. It’s certainly worth taking the +110 price tag at bet365, as a $10 bet earns a profit of $11.

In 27 starts, deGrom has recorded 16-plus outs 18 times. He’s pitched as many as eight innings against the Houston Astros on May 15. He’s cleared this prop just twice in his past six starts, creating a good opportunity to buy the discount.

📈 Rangers vs. Mets betting odds analysis

This game opened as a coin flip, but the Mets are trading as high as -118 to win Friday’s opener. The total started at a flat eight before dropping overnight. I’d be surprised if the odds move much further in either market, but I like Texas and the Under at the current price.

How do baseball odds work?

When betting on MLB, the run line shows how many runs the favorite needs to win by in order to cash the bet. For example, a favorite of -1.5 must win by two or more runs to cover the run line, while an underdog at +1.5 must win outright or lose by one run to cover the run line.

Moneyline odds represent the payout for picking the outright winner (+200 means a $100 bet wins $200, while -200 means a $200 bet wins $100). Over/Unders let you wager on whether the combined total of runs will be higher or lower than the set number.
