Dodgers vs. Mets MLB Picks: Two Best NL Teams Square Off

Two of the best teams in baseball will face each other for the second contest in their three-game series at Citi Field Wednesday. Here’s our Dodgers-Mets picks.

In a series that could very well mirror the NLCS come October, tonight’s installment is expected to be a pitcher’s duel between Tyler Anderson and Jacob deGrom. 

The Dodgers took the first game in a thrilling 4-3 win, and tonight’s expected to be another low-scoring contest. Los Angeles has now won three games in a row and has won six of their seven series in the month of August, including four sweeps. They became the first team in the league to reach 90 wins on Tuesday.

The Mets have now lost two games in a row, but remain atop of the NL East with a three-game lead over the reigning champions Atlanta Braves. The Mets have won six of their eight series this month, including two sweeps. 

Here are my MLB picks and predictions for Wednesday night’s game between the Dodgers and Mets (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, and DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5 scale).

Dodgers vs. Mets Odds Analysis 

The Mets are the Moneyline favorites, ranging from -155 at BetMGM to -165 at DraftKings. Opening at -141, 55% of the cash and 56% of the handle are on the Mets to win.

The total is set at 6.5 at all major sportsbooks, after being bet down from an opening of 7. That's not surprise given that DeGrom is projected to start.

Tyler Anderson (13-2, 2.69 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) vs. Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.15 ERA, 0.55 WHIP)

Jacob deGrom pitching is appointment viewing for any baseball fan, but Tyler Anderson on the hill makes this a real pitcher’s duel. Anderson’s been impressive all season, but he’s been especially exceptional recently. In his last seven games, he’s allowed 31 hits and only 10 earned runs in 43.1 innings pitched with a 2.08 ERA. He’s struck out 30 batters and allowed just 13 walks. As the season progresses, he’s only gotten better and better.

In most cases, Anderson would give his team the starting pitching advantage. But anytime Jacob deGrom is on the mound, he automatically gives his team the one-up. While he’s only made five starts this season because of injury, he’s been near perfect in those 5 starts recording 14 hits, seven earned runs, just two walks, and 46 strikeouts all in the span of only 29.1 innings pitched. Batters are slashing .139 against deGrom this season. He’s recorded at least nine strikeouts in 4 of his 5 starts this season, so it'll be quite the test for a lethal Dodgers lineup.

Dodgers vs. Mets ML Pick

Mets (-155) ★★

This one was a real toss-up. On the one hand, very rarely do you see the Dodgers as the underdog and that alone has a lot of value in it. However, in a three-game series between these two teams with the Dodgers already taking the first game, New York’s best bet at a win is obviously with their ace on the mound to try and avoid a three-game losing streak.

It’ll certainly be a close low-scoring game, but deGrom’s been near perfect in every aspect. The high volume strikeouts we expect from him in combination with him pitching deeper into each start gives the Mets the leg up.

Under 6.5 (+102) ★★★

For any game with deGrom on the mound, I’d take the Under. While 6.5 runs is particularly low with these two lineups, Anderson’s also right up there in strikeouts. He’s been having the best season of his career and in 22 starts this year, he’s already at 111 strikeouts. Last season in 31 starts, he struck out 134. Hitters are averaging .219 at the plate against Anderson.

Given the near-perfection we’ve seen from Anderson in his last seven starts, as long as he can keep the walks under control, I’m sticking with the Under even at this low number.

Anderson Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+130)

Anderson averaged four strikeouts per game in the month of August in five starts. In his 22 starts total this season, it’s been an average of 5 per game. The Mets lineup have a season strikeout rate of 20%, and in their last 3 games, are 23.3%. 

Though it’s right on the cusp, I’m giving Anderson the edge and taking the Over on this strikeout prop.
