My UTSA vs. Texas A&M prediction and college football picks for the first week of action have you covered for today's AAC vs. SEC matchup. Quarterbacks Marcel Reed and Owen McCown duke it out from Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN).
No. 19 Texas A&M is a massive 23-point betting favorite, which has a tick up from the opening line of 20.5 but pulled back from hitting 24 points earlier in the week. My college football predictions for Week 1 include which team should come away with the cover and feature my favorite player prop for McCown.

🐦 UTSA +24.5 (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

McCown is the key to this game. He was solid last year, averaging 263.4 passing yards per game, but with 25 touchdowns to 10 interceptions, his passer rating (137.9) could’ve been better. The good news is that he improved over the season. In his last six games, McCown averaged 295.7 passing yards and with a much better passer rating (148.3).
On the other side, Texas A&M returns quarterback Marcel Reed, who averaged just 169.5 passing yards per game, albeit with a better season-long passer rating (142.1). While Reed’s legs are certainly a valuable additional asset, he wasn’t good enough to propel Texas A&M to cover against Bowling Green (-21) or New Mexico State (-39).
While the Aggies probably have a better offense this year than they did last year, their defense lost several key assets, which could be a major problem against a UTSA offense that returns almost all its starters. Consistency is key early in the season, and I expect the Roadrunners to get enough good looks to keep this one close - or at least close enough to secure a late-game backdoor should the Aggies pull their starters.
Back UTSA to cover the 24.5-point spread at BetMGM to score an $8.70 profit on a $10 bet.

⬆️ Owen McCown Over 220.5 passing yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐

If UTSA covers, it will probably be thanks to some splash plays by the quarterback. While popping against defensive-minded head coach Mike Elko won’t be easy, McCown’s total for this game is probably too low. Texas A&M’s defense ranked a pedestrian 55th in yards allowed per play (5.4) and 58th in yards allowed per pass attempt (7.2) last year.
McCown gets three of his four top receivers back in wideouts Willie McCoy III and Devin McCuin to go with tight end Houston Thomas. McCoy averaged an electric 19.1 yards per reception and could easily rip off a chunk play that covers a ton of territory for this play. McCown cleared this total in nine of 13 games last year, and while the matchup is tough, I think this line is too low.
Back McCown to go over 220.5 passing yards on Saturday - a $10 bet on the -115 odds (53.5% probability) at bet365 will yield an $8.70 profit.

📈 UTSA vs. Texas A&M betting odds analysis
Texas A&M opened as a 20.5-point betting favorite with moneyline odds of around -1700 (94.4%). Since then, the Aggies have gotten out to 24-point betting favorites, give or take a half point, with moneyline odds of around -2400 (96%).
The total for this game hasn’t seen nearly as much movement. After opening at 56.5, most books still have it there. You may be able to find a few outlier books with a 57.5, like FanDuel, but there generally hasn’t been much movement.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see this spread tick back toward the key number of 21 as kickoff approaches. UTSA is thought to be one of the best Group of Five teams this year, and sharp money could come in to bring the spread back down.

How do college football odds work?
When betting on college football, the point spread shows how many points the favorite needs to win by in order to cash the bet. For example, a favorite of -3 must win by more than 3 points to cover the spread, while an underdog at +3 must win outright or lose by fewer than 3 points to cover the spread.
Moneyline odds represent the payout for picking the outright winner (+200 means a $100 bet wins $200, while -200 means a $200 bet wins $100). Over/Unders let you wager on whether the combined total will be higher or lower than the set number.
