Hitting on one player to steal a base in a specific game is an unlikely event. It’s possible but hitting the exact player in the exact game is tough.

Just think about what it’s like to hit a two-leg parlay based on players stealing bases because that is how a Tennessee bettor turned $100 into $17,750 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Chicago Cubs utility player Jonathan Villar (+750) and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Matt Vierling (+2000) were the players that came through for the big payday.

Generally, stolen bases are down in Major League Baseball compared to previous eras. In 1982, for example, there was an average of .75 stolen bases per game. Last season, that rate was down to .455 per game. As home runs became more difficult to hit early in this season, that might have opened up the basepaths to some degree and the stolen base rate has climbed to .509 per game. It’s a long way from the 1980s, but there is a small increase there.

Villar, who had 62 stolen bases in 2016 and has stolen 237 bases in his career, had four stolen bases on the season entering Monday’s game against the San Diego Padres, but three of those stolen bases had come in the past 11 games.

Vierling is still trying to earn a regular spot in MLB and he stole 10 bases in 80 minor league games last season, after stealing 22 bases in 118 games at High-A ball in 2019. With the Phillies this season, Vierling had one stolen base in 27 games and had been caught once, Saturday against Arizona. He did, however, steal a base in the ninth inning of Sunday’s win against Miami, swiping second base just before Rhys Hoskins doubled him home with the game-winning run.

A two-leg stolen base parlay is not easy to pick but pays off nicely.
