Morocco vs Spain  Preview

The 22nd-ranked Morocco (2-1-0) will look to remain undefeated against a seventh-overall Spain team (1-1-1), as the round of 16 concludes. Spain (-460) is heavily favored over Morocco (+330) to advance to the quarterfinals and play the winner of Portugal and Switzerland.

Spain

Despite only winning one match to this point, Spain has the second-best goal differential of all 32 teams. The 2010 champions have not won since their dominating 7-0 performance against Costa Rica in the opener. They are coming off a 2-1 loss to Japan in a match that decided the winner of group E. Spain dominated possession (82%), but was unable to convert past the 11th minute. Alvaro Morata scored his third goal of the tournament, matching Cody Gakpo as the only other player to score in each of his team's group-stage matches.

Morocco

Coming into the tournament as the third-ranked team in Group F, an undefeated start for Morocco came as a surprise to many. Their 2-0 victory over Belgium caused riots in Europe’s capital Brussels and ultimately eliminated the group favorites from the tournament. Morocco is now on a two-game win streak after defeating the Canadians 2-1 their last time out. It has been a team effort for the country to this point, with four different players scoring once in the three games. Both goaltenders earned a clean sheet to begin the tournament, and starter Yassine Bounou (Illness) allowed the team’s only goal against of the tournament in his return to action.

The most recent matchup between the two countries was a 2-2 draw to close out the group stage in the 2018 World Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 am Eastern time, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinal at the same time this Saturday.
