I tried to deposit with TheGreek and Wells Fargo refused to process the wire unless I told them what the purpose of the wire was. I've sent plenty of wires before and have never been asked any questions like that, including once before at Wells Fargo. I told them it's none of their business and left.

#9I consider all my sportsbook accounts "Private equity investment accounts". That would be an accurate answer that would likely go through. It's funny... I just sent a bankwire to Greek, from WF last week.Comment -

#12Wells Fargo is one of the most unethical financial institutions around, and that is saying a lot, considering the competition is so scandalous.
I would find other banks if I were you. Quickly.Comment -

#17that is odd...has to be at branch level or tripped some security check. I get and receive multiple wires each week from combo of horses, poker and sports...The horse are legit but I do not think bank pays any attention to others unless they are over 10K limit within 24hrs then they ask you to fill out form..Comment -

#18Never had a problem at Wells.
Citi called me like 3 months after I sent 5 wires. Women asked me why I had sent them. I asked her why she cared. She had no response. So I said, are you hot? She said yes. I said perfect. I was buying real estate - want to come visit. She hung up.Comment -

Financial privacy is a thing of the past in this country. If I spoke French I'd move to Switzerland.

#23I had the same account. Effective February 8, all grandfathered WAMU accounts are being converted to Chase Total Checking accounts with a $12 monthly fee. You should have gotten a letter about it by now. It's a shame, you couldn't ask for a better account. No maintenance fee or balance requirements, overdraft fee refunds. Free wire transfers, checks, money orders, cashier's checks. All of that stuff will be gone come February.Comment -

If TheGreek is dumb enough to have their name mentioned in any of the info you need to fill out to send them a wire transfer then they deserve to have it refused. It should just be a bank name and make no mention of the books name at all.Comment -

#30Hell yeah, it is their business.
They are SENDING THE MONEY. This is the exact definition of "their business".
Gambling transactions are fukking illegal.
They have every right to ask; and promptly deny your transfer.
Kudos to Wells Fargo. They are doing their part to disable this vice and pox on sports.Comment -

#31I too was surprised Citi called 3 months later.
The interesting thing is I sent about 15 wires. They only chose 5 to ask about. They also asked why I took out a bunch of cash on day. I told them to give it to the homeless.
Funny thing is about 7 of the wires were to Citi Costa rica, Citi Panama, etc.. They didnt ask about those...Comment -

#33It probably was a UIGEA thing. Each bank is free to decide how fine-grained they want to try to filter transactions beyond the minimum as defined in the law itself. The UIGEA actually makes it pretty easy for wires go through and still maintain compliance. Some banks have stricter filters than others. The best thing to do is let your money to the talking (and the walking) by transferring out to another bank when you run into this crap. Their desire to go above and beyond the minimum by poking their snouts into your transactions will then cost them the entire balance of the account. Screw em.Comment -

#34As far as the phone calls are concerned, you can pretty much tell them anything besides gambling and they will accept it. They are just maintaining records to show they are trying to maintain compliance with the UIGEA in case they ever are called out on it by the financial crimes departments of the DoJ. "See look, we made phone calls about random wires. We are good little bankers and are playing by the rules".Comment -

#35This, or something similar, and follow up by asking "Why do you ask?", like you are surprised there might be some issue. And if they say something about gambling online, act shocked that anyone would waste money on something like that with all of the starving children in the world.Comment
