Every year, Vanderbilt does a statewide poll to gauge Tennesseans' positions on various issues.

The newest poll hit our inboxes yesterday, and this always feels like... well, not quite Christmas, but it is a rare gift to get this sort of insight into what our fellow Tennesseans are thinking.

I figured I'd devote some real estate in today's newsletter to some of the key findings on hot button political issues.

First up, the trend shows growing disapproval of the state legislature. In 2020, 60% of Tennessee voters said they approved of the General Assembly, that number has now fallen to below 50%. This may be explained in part by some of the poll's other findings, where state residents are falling more out of step with the legislature's actions. Abortion Tennessee now has a ban on nearly all abortions, but the Vandy poll shows that 52% of Tennesseans say they're "definitely" or "somewhat" pro-choice. Ten years ago, that was 45%. And on in vitro fertilization, 82% of Tennesseans are in favor, with broad support shown across both parties. This seems relevant given that the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos from IVF should be regarded as children. Guns There is bipartisan support for modest gun control measures, like temporarily restricting access to guns for people considered to be a danger to themselves or others. There's also somewhat of a gender gap here. For women, 81% strongly support these measures, compared with 70% of men. Meanwhile, certain gun-related questions — like whether it's a good idea to arm teachers — see a stark contrast between the parties. More than three-quarters of respondents who consider themselves "MAGA Republicans" approve of arming teachers. But when you look at all Tennesseans, there's a near-even split on the issue. Vaccines While the poll shows Tennesseans are skeptical of "medically recommended" vaccines, 76% say they are "extremely, very or somewhat likely to take a vaccine to prevent a serious illness" — with more women than men saying they're likely to take a vaccine to prevent serious illness. Democrats have a more positive view of vaccines than Republicans. Democracy A majority of Tennesseans say they believe that American democracy is under attack. But the parties differ on where they see the threat. Republicans see Democrats and China as major threats, and Democrats see the Republican Party as the biggest threat to democracy. They also consider Russia to be a bigger threat than China. Last, but not least... The majority of Tennessee voters — 60% — are in favor of legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
