What college basketball programs have been the most consistent, the most prestigious since the 1984-85 season? After unveiling the top 290 schools all week, here are the top 10.
How do you evaluate the 50 best programs in the modern era of college hoops? That's the issue ESPN's researchers tackled with the Prestige Rankings. Here are Nos. 21-30.
The above article/list was written in 2008, which is much closer to your infamous runner up. At that point, it had Illinois at 23... I cannot believe it has moved up since.

#110The main thing coaches usually look for is what they're going to be paid. Shaka turned down atleast $2.5 million a year for 6 years. Illinois also promised an upgrade to the facilities was on it's way. I highly doubt Shaka took into consideration the financial ability of the institution. It's not like his check was going to bounce. The dude is just happy where he is right now. Only one player from this years team won't be back. I'm sure he thinks he can make another run next year.Comment -

Illinois was 6th here.
They are sliding obviously because Weber has taken away excitement from the program.
When a coach is considering going into a new program, they should obviously take into account that they should be able to end a slide if they do their job.Comment -

#112That is the thing people don't understand. I remember back in 2004-2005-2006 walking into Assembly Hall for a big game, the environment was as good as any.
Now, with Weber's horrible recruiting for those 3-4 years and his horrible coaching with this current squad has really killed the atmosphere. The fans aren't as into it, there aren't sell outs like there used to be, etc.
As a new coach, you obviously take into account what Illinois CAN become... not what they are currently.Comment -

#113I saw 13 on Forbes most recently, the link you posted is ancient - has Arizona at 4, when they're really around 7 or 8.
The info I provided was a synopsis from the businessofcollegesports.com
Do you know if the Illinois Athletic Department is self-sustaining, or is it dependent on tax payers?Comment -

#115Two Final Fours since '52? No titles? ONE runner-up? Illinois is not a clear-cut Top 20 basketball program.Comment -

Illinois - 0 Nat Titles, 1 Runner Up, 5 F4, 9 E8, 11 S16
Utah - 1 Nat Title, 1 Runner Up, 4 F4, 5 E8, 15 S16
Oklahoma St - 2 Nat Titles, 0 Runner Up, 6 F4, 11 E8, 14? S16
Arkansas - 1 Nat Title, 1 Runner Up, 6 F4, 10 E8, 10+ S16
Did you even look into this before spouting out this ignorant babble? Illinois is in no shape, way, or form a clear-cut more elite program than any of these programs. I honestly hope you are not the age/have the academia you claim to have, because you act and have the brain power that I would expect more from a teenager than a mid 20s man.Comment -

#117he is happy where he is at because he knows that all he has to do to be successful at vcu is get to the tournament and spring an upset every couple of years.
I'm not disagreeing with you, i just don't think he has the balls to go to illinois where they expect big 10 titles and/or sweet 16's as the basis for a successful season.Comment -

#118That list was off the top of my head, but since you insist...
Illinois - 0 Nat Titles, 1 Runner Up, 5 F4, 9 E8, 11 S16

Oklahoma St - 2 Nat Titles, 0 Runner Up, 6 F4, 11 E8, 14? S16

Pick one.
Since I've been alive, Illinois has been a top 10-15 program. Since the 3 point shot was put into place, Illinois has been a top 10-15 program.
If you really put Utah, Oklahoma State, or Arkansas above Illinois going forward, then you should direct your petty insults at yourself.Comment -

That being said, it isn't an easy job. There are a lot of things a new coach has to fix and not everyone wants to work hard or risk failure.Comment -
