That is why the goalie must match the speed of the skater. It is not as simple as you make it, and anyone who is even mediocre as a goalie can match the speed of a skater coming at him. I just got a call from the All State Hockey Coach in NJ, he keeps his goalies home on breakaways. He did say the kid gives up goals but in long run staying at home makes offensive player over anxious and he usually goes wide or high. By the way the team won it all last year.
