the show started off slow, but is picking up as of late. they made 8 shows so far.

I could make a better rendition just carrying a camcorder around the track and taping random encounters.

The show is way over the top and so reliant upon the mythology of stuff that goes on at the track it is completely unbelievable. I watched the first episode and turned it off part way through the second. It is a worse adaptation of a gambling topic that that complete failure "Tilt" was. It is almost bad enough to cancel HBO sub over.

Poker scene in the second episode (where the guy goes to his car to bring back another brick because he wasn't content just playing for table stakes when he already got all his money in with kings on a ace high board) was beyond ridiculous...

Pretty good show, especially for degenerate gamblers. Jason Gedric's character could probably be about 70% of people on this forum ...

I like the Escalante character and the stuff on the jockeys with the injuries.weight issues is something that a lot of people probably don't think about

Have liked the show a lot so far. The pilot didn't seem great at first, but I watched that and the second episode a few more times. It grew on me - lot of good acting and directing here.

Good cinematography, but the only character I like is the Poker player dude. Also, the guy who tried to buy a horse seems alright. Horse player guys are a terrible group of people usually so I do sort of like how this show made a bunch of unlikeable characters! How can anyone seriously like the guy who is in the electric wheelchair???
The female jockey and kentucky horse owner seem cool too.

Hoffman, Farina, Nolte all acting Gods, they could all be playing kazoos for an hour a week and would be better than anything on any network. Milch's shows take time, but are always worth it, which is why he was so irate with HBO over John from California that he deprived the world of the last 4 seasons of Deadwood.

He's owned racehorses since 1992, if anyone can make a show about gamblers work, it's David Milch.

I love the scenes from Santa Anita, they had Bill Barich who wrote "Racing in the hills" write the third episode. Jay Hovdey is on the writing staff too, there really isnt much on TV or in the movies that is really authentic about horse racing. A little slow out of the gate but I am going to give it a chance.

Episode three was all about character and plot development. Not much action. The pace needs to be picked up. So far the guy playing Escalante is doing the best acting job. And Gary Stevens role is effective in giving me the creeps. Coke and booze dinner of champions.

The pilot is choppy but come on - where else can you see this played out by top notch actors led by a phenomenal director / producer. 3 episodes in and this series seems solid top to bottom IMHO... I can't wait for the next episode.

Gambling shows in general fall short of expectation to guys who are fixed into the gambling world. One of the reasons is most people aren't completely involved in gambling therefore they have to over exaggerate gambling situations to get the point across to these people. EX: Episode 2 the poker scene where the kid added tons of money to the table to get his money in with KK vs the Asian with an AQ8 flop. Obviously as gamblers we know that this isn't just bad, but it would never happen in reality but to the novice gambler they have picked up that this is a bad poker player which is the point the writer is trying to get across to the people viewing. Minor poker room mistakes that true gamblers would recognize as being bad, the casual watcher would not so you have to deal with some shit that isn't realistic when watching these shows. If they made it realistic the casual fan would be lost and they are obviously the audience you need to attract for the show to have any success.

I've really enjoyed the show so far. It's a slow burn, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Gedrick is really holding his own acting wise. I love his character.
