I was up early this morning organizing my work and getting prepared for the rapidly approaching MLB Season, and I thought I would pass along some Handicapping tips.
I have known many bettors that analyze the starters front-back-and sideways, only to lose games in the late innings over and over. They failed to take into account one of the most important aspects: The Bullpen. The evolution of the starting pitcher has changed greatly over the years. It used to be that starters would go into the 8th inning, but times have changed. Now starters get credit for "Quality Starts" if they pitch into the 6th inning. This leaves 1/3 of the game out of their control. Yes it is important to analyze and handicap the starters, but it is equally important to handicap the Bullpens. Check Bullpen ERA, WHIP, and Innings used. If you dig deep many times you can find nice Value in an underdog with a more rested and better Bullpen. Also be aware that some Managers will only use their closer for two consecutive games and therefore they may not be available in some games. Do your homework, not only on the starting pitcher, but on the bullpen as well. This is even more important early in the season when some managers have their starters on a pitch count and may take them out in the fourth or fifth innings.
Handicapping Managers can be useful as well. Some managers try to win every game, while some focus on just winning the series. The managers that focus on winning the series (Tony La Russa for example), can be a great play against in the 3rd or 4th game of a series if they have the series wrapped up. They rest starters and play bench players, some without much experience. They will also try and rest their bullpens in this situation and games can become blowouts.
Handicap the weather and the stadiums as well. Knowing the weather (wind direction, temperature, humidity) can assist you in finding an advantage in Totals. Some parks are pitchers parks, and some are hitters parks. But many times if the wind is blowing in or out can dramatically change that dynamic. Some stadiums have short dimensions in right or left and knowing the wind direction and velocity can be very helpful. The ball carries better in some stadiums when the temperatures heat up, but does not carry when it is cooler. So know your facts about stadiums and also how the weather effects them.
Handicap the Homeplate Umpire. There are past seasons of data on Umpires, that show Over/Under bias. Be sure and know the Umpire behind the plate before betting that Over or Under. There is a reason that Umpire X is 23-11 Under, or Umpire Z is 20-12 Over. DO NOT make plays just based on the Umpire. But if your handicapping leads you to an Under, check the Umpire, if Umpire Z is the umpire you may not want to bet 5 units maybe just 2. On the flip-side if you handicap an Under and Umpire X is the ump, you may want to step it up a little.
In closing, remember to look at the whole picture when handicapping Baseball. Every little edge you can put in your favor can add a win or two here and there, and over a 162 games season this can be huge to your bottom line.
