I think maybe the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 just meant that was their prophecy for when the US will finally seal its borders. To Mexicans, the world is basically over if they can't get into the US anymore. So yes I think it's possible the world will essentially end for Mexicans in 2012, but for regular people like us everything should be fine.

The environmental nazis wanted everyone to believe that the melting of the Arctic ice would cause a huge rise in the water level of the oceans, with resultant massive flooding. Fortunately for us the environmental nazis don't know anything about basic physics. Ice occupies more volume than water, so the melting ice is not causing a rise in ocean levels. These are the same people who try to scare us with the global warming doomsday scenarios. Hmmm, makes one wonder about their credibility.

Anyway, I love to read what other people have to say about calendars in general, love to see folks get worked up over something that really doesn't matter, like the old "Does the new millenium start in 2000 or 2001" arguments I used to laugh at eight years ago or so.

i'm a person who "has to see it to believe it" kind of way about me, so if something major is going to happen, bring it on. I've been hearing about the world is going to end since i was a kid, i'm really getting sick of it. i've watched so many shows on Discovery and History channel over the years about every kind of ancient civilization you could imagine, and all the ancient people have some kind of prophecy they believed in.
i always remember this old stand-up bit from Mark Maron, he talks about how everyone goes by what so-called old prophets wrote, and how come a God hasn't gave us any new prophets in the past 2000 years, there all old, if someone new tries to claim to be a prophet from a higher power, everyone dismisses them as crazy. you ever see homeless people on the streets wandering around yelling at the sky "I CAN'T, NO, I Can't", maybe they are just reluctant prophets.

Not so fast. You can't just dismiss the environmental nazis.

1 gram of ice occupies more volume than 1 gram of water, but displaces exactly 1 cc (as much as 1 gram of water does.) The extra volume is what floats above the surface when it's ice. The shape is irrelevant, as is the exact density of the ice.

However, the melting of ice sheets sitting on land (not floating) would obviously raise the water level. So would thermal expansion of the water from whatever was causing the melting.
