Agreed, soccer is an entertaining sport while MLB has become BORING sans the playoffs.

However, I'm sure I'd be labelled a heretic in Europe for saying this, but I'd like to see the game evolve and make a few significant rule changes which I think would bring the sport in line with the amount of $$$ and interest shown in it.

a) Card system --> it's too much of "all or nothing" with the red/yellow cards, especially an early sending off can cost/gain a team millions of dollars. The refs are sought with torch and pitchfork. how about a Hockey style penalty box for fouls in-between yellow and red? An incidental elbow in the 10th minute instead of a red card sending off, put them down to 10 men for say, 20 minutes. For bigger fouls, send the player off, and let a sub serve his penalty time and come back in after maybe 30 minutes. For the most egregious fouls do like a traditional red card. Maybe make even yellow cards worth 5 minutes in the box. This would eliminate the "Let's kick Messi off the pitch by take turns getting stuck in" and spreading the yellow cards around the team. Musical yellow cards and no one is really penalized.

b) Make playing for a draw less profitable. Most of the games that are low scoring I think are because of mentality. A lot of time a team on the road is content to play for a draw. Why? For poorer teams they feel it's better to grab those 1 pt draws to keep out the bottom of the table. Let's make it 4 or 5 pts for a win, and 1 for a draw, so draw seeking teams will have some consolation, but it will not be profitable to play negative football and get out nil-nil. I know it used to be 2 win/1 draw so 3/1 is a step in the right direction, but let's see even more here.

c) This kind of relates for both A and B, and I don't really have a solution, but the situation where a player DIVES in the box and is awarded a penalty kick for a 1-0 victory is rewarded under the current system. Again millions of dollars change hands on a dive that turns into a goal, OF COURSE they players are going to DIVE. If you even this out by putting divers in the "penalty box" you might offset this (a bit). If teams are going forward more due to B, maybe that critical call blown by the official to award a PK for a dive doesn't factor in as many games.

d) England especially I think is at a crossroads. A lot of old-schoolers love the more physical tackling and play in the Premier League. At the same time the Premier League wants to be seen as "The Best League" in the world and pays big money to import stars from around the world. For weaker teams, they can play a physical style and target these star players to even the field. I think eventually they will have to make a decision, much like the NFL did to start protecting it's MONEYMAKERS, the QB's, or face mounting injuries and less butts in the seats while the star players miss many games due to injury.

The thread can't be rescued because the original post was made just to get a rise out of people. OP must be pretty bored to post this way, regardless of his actual opinion of soccer. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but that's not why he posted.

Soccer is a great sport. I'm an American, and grew up playing soccer (9 years.) I love to watch it. Conversely, I'd rather have my fingernails pulled out than watch baseball, golf, or (most of the time) the NBA.

Unfortunately, two things have happened to soccer that make it sometimes difficult to watch and enjoy.

1. The constant falling down and writhing in pain effort. Seems like this happens 50 times per game. The slightest bump, and someone's trying to win an Oscar. Fouls happen - no doubt. However, more and more, the embellishment is just too prevalent, and takes away from the game.

2. Not trying to score when a tie is "good enough." These are paid athletes - their goal should be to win, not to settle.

All professional sports events are for the fans, and the governing bodies should never forget that. We buy the tickets, etc, and no one wants to see a tie.

I've always suggested that the pro soccer leagues play their games to conclusion. I'm a huge hockey fan as well, and love how they've corrected this in the NHL.

In any pro soccer match, all they would have to do is award each team 1 point in the event of a tie at the end of regulation. Then play a golden goal period followed by PK (if no one scores) to determine the winner, and award an additional point.

3 points for a win in regulation
1 point for a tie
1 point for a win in extra time/PK

That way, the fans are happy, and there will be that motivation for a team to play for the win, rather than settle for the tie.

It doesn't add anything extra in terms of cost, and would be SO easy to implement.

By the way, for those who said hockey is boring - you either don't know enough about the sport, or aren't paying attention. It has just as much action (if not more at times) than the NFL.

Is it just me or is Maxcraft getting dumber? Impressive considering he's the biggest moron I've ever seen express an opinion on this forum. You clearly don't understand football and I don't think you ever will. It is not a game just played just by the race you call "euros" either, it is the most popular sport in the world. You prefer a game that has a clock time of 60 minutes but lasts 3+ hours with no fluidity? I also don't understand anyone's issue with the draw. It is a part of football and team are still rewarded much more heavily for winning these days than previously when it was only 2 points for a win. As for extra time every game to settle a draw, these players already play in excess of 90 minutes without time outs, rolling substitutions or different teams for offense/defense. It is already a long season

I just finished watching Man Utd-Arsenal. I won money on it. And I have to say, that matched confirmed for me what I already believed. Soccer is a tedious, frustrating game to watch. More kids in the US play soccer than any other youth sport, and my wife is in a soccer league. I get that it might be fun to play. But watching it feels like a punishment for something I didn't know I did.
