A little while ago a poster said his skein had run out as a bettor, horseplayer mainly, and he was entering the real world.
Which brought to mind a story I'd heard years ago.
A hard-bitten horse player - call him Louie - took his nephew out to the track for the first time,
He showed the kid his Racing Form. And the kid, after looking it over, asked:
"Say, Uncle Louie, what's the green pen markings mean under this horse?"
Louie: "That's for horses that show early speed out of the gate."
Nephew: "Oh.Then, what's the meaning of this blue pen?"
Louie: "That's to tell me what horses are stalkers, mid-pace. I try to set up how the race is gonna be run by marking them all like that."
Nephew: "Gee, that's interesting. And the horses marked with black pen?"
Louie: "The closers, kid. The ones who lay far back and make a big run in the stretch."
Nephew: "Wow, Uncle Louie. You really know all abou this stuff. You must win a lot. What about the horses marked with a red pen?"
Louie: "That ain't a red pen, kid. That's my blood."
