Amazing how we were always taught it was a surprise attack.

Even the quote in your post says "suddenly" implying a surprise.

Only ones surprised were in Hawaii themselves, everyone else, including the rest of the world, already knew well in advance.

    That's kinda fukked up.

    Kinda.

    Thank you for the post.
    Indeed a day of remembrance.

I guess some see it as the impetus that was required.

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, that was the scene of a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.

For some perspective, more people died daily from Covid for months

The event that influenced my dad to study Naval engineering in college.
Dad retired chief engineer in charge of the now imploded Military Ocean Terminal Base.

FDR loved the Navy, FDR was devastated.
    Did FDR know in advance?
    I'm not so sure.

FDR, IMO, did the absolute best he could have done.

Not so sure FDR was directly involved or to blame, that's definitely been unsubstantiated rumor.

But why even mention FDR? Plenty of Washington officials were warned ahead of time, and made the choice to keep it quiet.

It's history now, but we know much more about that history than we were originally taught, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act.

Here's to the sacrifices made that day, they were huuuuuge.

You have a deeper, emotional background to December 7th than most alive today.
It is truly a Day of Infamy and should be honored.

They ain't making Presidents like FDR, Truman, and Ike anymore.

Before my time, before I was born, we had FDR, Truman, Ike, back to back to back.

In today's world, can you imagine having to go through rationing of basic goods like we did in WW2? Gasoline, tires, sugar, coffee, meat, etc. People would lose their f'n minds.

The think I respect most about FDR is this man was ravished, crippled with polio since pretty much a kid.
Paralyzed from the waist down, in agony, walked (with help) to the podium and inspired an entire nation.

The man couldn't even get dressed without help without crying in pain.

My ex wifes grandfather worked at Oakridge Tn on one of the bombs we dropped on Japan, in the "Secret City" as they called it.

Alpha Track Calutron at the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge used an electromagnetic separation process to enrich uranium. This photo was taken in 1944 or 1945.

It wasn’t until the atomic bomb dropped in 1945 that employees realized they had been building the most powerful weapon the world had ever seen.

Twenty one years old is what I've been told and taught.
Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, i wasn't around 80 years ago, all I know it what I've been taught.

He had 6 kids, he couldn't have sex after polio, so you do the math.

My dad hit Omaha Beach and lived to tell about it.

He was later in the tank Corp but he Wounded while in England from a buzz bomb and put into the photographers pool for the OSS.

Was with the first group to come upon the aftermath of the frozen Battle of the Bulge. Had photos of the terrible torture that took place there to our troops.

Mom drove a supply truck from California to Vegas countless times for transportation of those supplies to the troops in Europe.

Every American was on the same mission. As were the allies.
    Prevailing was the only option.

Amazing what we can do when we are all one.

He didn’t like talking about it much but did say more than once that all the allies and especially the British were tough as nails and we would not have won without them.

A day to never forget along with D Day.

Thanks Nasher for reminding us !
