Is it profitable to run a NFL handicapping contest??

Or is it just a hassle?? There Was a time that i was playing in NFL handicapping contests at caribsports, BetDSI, 5Dimes, Betagame, mybookie, heritagesports, betonline, and youwager, the greek, etc. now only mybookie, betonline, youwager, and heritagesports have them. And I really hate the ones at youwager and heritagesports. What has happened to books sponsoring a NFL handicapping contest for their clients?? Do they think we bet less if we are in a contest? Or is it just too much of a hassle and the payouts are more than the entries?? I can see a book losing money on it too.

It is not profitable. It is a customer giveaway. It is only profitable if you get more signups because of the contest. The contest itself is just designed to keep customers and probably create action. If it creates more action then it might become profitable. It is mostly just something to hang on to customers by giving them a little entertainment and maybe require them to gamble a bit more.

So they have gone away because people are not all that interested and they don't do much good.

For many years I was in charge of a weekly football pool year where I was employed for eight years or so. It was a hassle but there were some rewards also. The rule of thumb is 10% kickback from the winners however that's not set in stone.

I'm willing to bet other posters have run pools in the past.

Not profitable says it all. I knew it had to be something along those lines because most books ran them and the advertisement to entice players to join was exciting. I think mybookie was 300k and betonline was 250k last year.

Yeah, you offer up big numbers and give people a chance at winning and they stick around. Nobody is going to sign up because they know they have zero chance of winning but you can keep people happy gambling there so it is worth giving back a little. The winnings come with rollover so you don't lose anything anyway.

10% kickback from the winners or 10% kickback from the total entries?? Seems like you would lose your shirt if its just getting kickback from the winners. Seems like everyone would have to pay the price to play.

I avoid ANY contest with a rollover or that pays in freeplays. I want to win, but not have to re bet the winnings

Well if it is free, it is worth playing. I just don't remember them or don't know about them. If you have to put money in, it is not going to work. Those are a scam. If you have to have gambled a certain amount then it is free again, if you qualify.

Basically they just want to keep you in the betting mood.

I’m always willing to pay to play just to avoid winnings rollovers and freeplay winnings. Just a PITA. When I win I want to win not recycle the winnings.

I run weekly and season long pools. If a weekly pool totaled 200 I might get tossed a twenty. Season pools could yield a three figure hand back. Not really worth the effort and I would get stiffed occasionally. I did get to know the CEO where otherwise I would have just been a # on a spread sheet. I did it for about five years.

Betonline upped the ante this year. Their NFL handicapping contest is half a million dollars in money prizes. I'm in.

$275.00 for five entries and a free roll in a Survivor Pool. Good promotion. I may join also. Contests are longshots but provide an opportunity for a major score. It will be interesting to see if other shops offer something comparable.

I don't think any other sportsbook will be close to this offer. They pretty much doubled the ante and prize structure from last year.

What is the format? I didn't find any information on their website about that. One would have to select 63% winners or better to win the thing.

Last year it was pick 5 games each week during the regular season. The lines were not static so you could change a pick before the game was played. I noticed they didn't have the rules this year too. I played two entries last year. It was some great players in it.

If you mean the recently named Pick 6 contest formerly Beat The Prick contest, it is up now to join. No thread yet, but it is open to join. I just joined earlier today. I think I was number 39 to signup.

I was in it too last year. I stunk up the joint pretty bad. Only one perfect week for a 1000 freeplay. Both of my entries were in the bottom half of entries. I'm leaving out the Thursday night games this year if we are doing it again. I think I missed most of the Thursday night games horribly.

I participated in the first addition two years ago. Finished mid- pack. Good exercise but after a slow start I mailed it in. Too many things were going on last year thus I passed. May enroll this year as I have more free time currently.
