    Theo Epstein

A year after Cubs signed him and gave him the keys to the empire Cubs finish just a couple games better than one of the worst teams of the new millennium, actually getting shut out twice by them the last couple nights.

I thought this guy was a genius? It isnt like the Cubs didnt let him throw money at it, they spent about 130 mil this year on pay roll.

He was on top of the world in 2004, and Dan Duquett was on the bottom. Now the reverse. He threw Big money at star players, how hard is that.

How much of that Payroll did Theo use to go out and get free agents prior to the 2012 season?

I'd say the main reason for the large payroll (preseason) #'s is due to guys like Soriano, Dempster, Soto, Byrd, Kerry Wood, Maholm, Garza.

He removed a 1/3 of that salary this season.

I think he is on the right track

    Theo is doing everything right.
The only thing he couldn't do was get Alfonso Soriano off the books

    He will fix that shit,
tons of draft picks coming in, young talent that he can sign for long term now that he has the money

he's got money to get some arms, gotta see what's out there

I was surprised that they couldn't unload Soriano this year, with so many close races at the end of July and Soriano having a bounce back year.

man what an albatross that contract is though.

sure would be alot more positive off season for cubs fans if Vitters and Jackson did not look like little leaguers out there at the end of the year.

What are you talking about? Theo spent virtually nothing. He signed Maholm and DeJesus to small deals. That's pretty much it. The payroll was less than 130m but in any case that was all money that was allocated prior to Theo. He knew they would be bad this season and made it pretty clear this was a long-term rebuilding. Next year will probably be bad too. Can't really judge for another 2-3 years minimum.

Up there with Branch Rickey and Steinbrenner, but it'd be easy to argue Theo should be No. 1.

Theo started with an organization that was one of the biggest messes of all time top to bottom. He wiped the entire thing clean and built from the ground up. To complete that process in 5 years and have the massive ship headed only in the right direction is unreal. I don't know that there is a comp in sports. Not to this extent.

He needs to come back to San Diego where he was given his first opportunity. Padres don't have any rings. Sad.

    Two curses broken, pretty impressive.
I'd like to see him do it with a small market/budget team next.
