Would of been Robin Ventura if he had won his fight against Nolan Ryan.

Not the answer to your question but Scott Rolen was an incredibly talented player both at the plate and in the field.

He kinda who I had in mind if we were talking strictly defense, he was good offensively but not good enough compared to some others. His defense was incredible tho!

In that case just off top of my head without digging into everyone’s numbers I’d say Mike Schmidt.

The answer is Schmidt. Boggs was one awesome player. Hitting skills almost unmatched.

Red Sox called him up too late. Should have had two more years in Majors.

I wanna say Boggs didn’t hit for enough power if memory serves me right. He was a great hitter tho. I don’t really remember what his defense was like?

Says a lot more about the league in 1987 than it does about Boggs. MLB went from 8.8 runs per game in 1986 to 9.5 in '87, then back down to 8.3 in '88. It feels like a lot of hitters had career years that year (in homers or ops): Trammell, Ozzie, Gwynn, Davis, Raines, Jack Clark, Will Clark, Strawberry, Evans, Molitor. A skinny Mark McGwire hit 49 homeruns which he didn't surpass that until 96. And that's not even listing the two MVPs, who were among two of the worst MVP choices ever.

Gold Gloves can't always account for a players fielding. Just look at Jeter. Boggs was a poor choice when he did win his two Gold Gloves. Weak at defense in his early years, but did improve a lot during his time in Boston and would have been an ok choice to win a couple his last few years with them. Overall, below Schmidt, Brett, and Mathews on defense.
