So, where along the line does the bill suddenly expand by 300 pages? According to the New York Times, the various committee chairs held behind the scenes meetings and hashed out a compromise with no allowance for public input. (What lobbyists were involved in those meetings?) And now we are expecting a Friday vote on a bill that has had no public hearing in a committee with jurisdiction over it and that is not yet available in the main engine of public disclosure, THOMAS.

This raises serious questions about how we expect Congress to disclose their activities to the public. Is a bill posted to the House Rules Committee and not THOMAS truly publicly available? While the bill may be available for 72 hours prior to consideration, the public does not have reasonable access to it. Nor does the public know how the final details were reached.

And that isn’t even the worst part. This, apparently, isn’t even the final bill. The final bill will be a manager’s amendment that will be drafted later this week! From a posting on the House Rules Committee, we know that the deadline to submit amendments is Thursday at 9:30am. And there is talk that this will be voted on on Friday. Thus, the final version of this bill will likely only be available for less than 24 hours.

Sunlight has been advocating for all bills to be posted online for 72 hours prior to consideration. It doesn’t look like that is going to happen here. If you think that Congress should read the bills they vote on, you can tell your congressman to both support the Read the Bill resolution, H. Res. 554, and to give the public enough time to read the final version of the cap and trade bill, whenever that is made available.

As Open Left’s Chris Bowers says about this process:

[Y]ou don’t get to know what is in the bill until it is too late. Further, you get no chances to improve the bill.

This is an unacceptable process and it needs to change.

While I'm sure you will point out what you don't like about Obama and how that those are the changes you want to avoid, I will say that our country choosing someone who CAN inspire Hope and Change in a people is awesome thing itself.

I would hope that those who do not agree with Obama will at least concede that he does have a CHANCE to inspire people and HOPEFULLY with his election, he becomes a man that they can aspire ambition among people.

Policy differences aside, there has got to be something positive you guys can see.

Imagine the joy felt inside of the children of the inner-city when Obama won. Those kids now FEEL that they too can actually grow up and be President.

While you can't run a country on feelings- at the very least, have a heart and appreciate the Positive Impact that can come out of his election, even if it's not felt for many years until those kids grow up.

If you foolishly think the economy will collapse, go ahead and double down on trying to short the stock market to zero.

In the real world, the bottom was set in March & a slight 5-15% correction is expected from recent highs will present another buying opportunity within the next 2-3 months. We will see DOW 9000+ by years end and the new BULL MARKET will last for another 10-11 years as WARREN BUFFET stated a few days ago.

Those kids that you speak of, the ones that won't feel it until they grow up, they will feel it alright. They might be growing up in a country where the government controls every aspect of their lives. The sad thing (hopefully not) is it may be the only thing they know. They might have to read about the former freedoms the old USA. Where the government didn't pretent to know what is good for you.

I don't have a problem...

Nor do I see Obama as the problem. Nor was Bush a problem. No, the problem is nation that is rapidly dividing itself into the HAVES and HAVE NOTS. Bush and Obama both serve the elites more than the common man.

My hope in Obama is that he may give back a lil more to the guy on main street. My disappointment with Bush was that he didn't seem to live up to his Republican Ideals. Being in campaign 24/7 mode got in the way in fulfilling some promises.

I voted for Bush. Twice. I'm a Christian who loved Bush's Compassionate Conservate idea. That didn't seem to materialize.

I originally wanted Huckabee. The man is as positive as they come. And actually seemed like one who could Implement his positive ideas. While I feel McCain "deserved" to be President, I could not vote for him. Maybe my idealism got the best of me, but I believe Obama has a chance to unite us, more than he can divide us.

When I wrote about seeing something Positive, I did not ask you, OOL, to say something Positive about policy, no, I just asked you to acknowledge the positives that came out of this. You are acting like everything is negative. That bitterness is what the Dems used to have, and why I voted Republican twice before. Now, the bitterness is with the Reps and I have decided to give the Dems a shot.

I am an indepent. A Christian who believes in social causes. Perhaps Obama can rally us. Perhaps he will divide us. If the latter happens, I'll support Huckabee in 2012. But until then, I believe that after an election, a citizen is support his or her President. And any disagreements on policy are to be on just that, policy. Not hate for the man himself or hoping he fails-- as that kind of thinking is un-american itself.

Now, OOL, I'll ask you to write something original for once, Instead of just copy/pasting gloom and doom articles...

I've never preached equal results... I concur with you there. But as I've said another post, there's something wrong when the community you come from can predict what type of success you are bound to have.

I also agree about not punishing success but the economy was great under Clinton, so a couple of more tax dollars from those that can afford it ARE NOT gonna bring the economy down.

Now, if you wanna propose a fair tax, or flat tax... I'd join you there
