if you don't pay recruits how are you supposed to drag anyone to Oxford and get them to stay?

The only way out of this is by winning. Fans in the SEC will graciously accept dirtiness and chronic rule-breaking as long as you win. They only pretend to have morality up to a certain point.
The embattled coach understandably wanted to avoid discussing certain topics during Thursday's press conference.

Just win.
Ole Miss couldn't win when they paid all those top recruits to play there. This is going to get pretty ugly by the end of the season

They won. Not a string of championships or anything, but they became relevant in a hurry under Freeze. This is why IMO it's hard for the program to just let him go like they probably should.
Hugh Freeze's days at Ole Miss could be numbered.According to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports, "explosive new information" in the NCAA investigation into Freeze and Ole Miss has put Freeze's job in "immediate jeopardy," and that a decision from the university could come soon. The information is not yet known at this time, but the development comes just over a week after former Rebels head coach Houston Nutt filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming that Freeze knowingly lied to journalists and blamed the majority of the NCAA's allegations on him. Related: Houston Nutt sues Ole Miss, claims Hugh Freeze spread lies about himFreeze has largely been mum in regards to fielding questions surrounding the NCAA's investigation, dodging questions earlier this summer while at the Regions NCR Pro-Am. Freeze has led Ole Miss to a record of 39-25 since taking over the program prior to the 2012 season.

Ross and the university are trying to keep this under wraps. Covering for Freeze as much as they can. Mark my words, more will come out in the coming weeks. They said it was one call after he was even allowed to redact anything he thought was trouble. What the hell was that?? Key phrase is "pattern of conduct" meaning he did more than just make a single one minute call.
