I think that's kind of a simplistic viewpoint and not the right way to look at it.

IN an unpredictable election season, IF he makes the debates, he could suddenly take off and win. Still a longshot, but not impossible. He must make the debates though to be taken seriously and to get traction. There are many more from both sides that would love to vote for someone else if they thought they had a chance. It can feed on itself if all goes right. 2% chance. Not impossible though. He needs a big event of wide endorsements within the next month.
