yes, economics plays a major role because you don't have to be rich to play soccer...all you need is a ball...and also like Death Adder said its easy to learn and play...so most South American and European kids play it every chance they get 24/7, 365 days a year in hopes of becoming a pro player and escaping poverty...just like in the Dominican Republic, where every kid is playing baseball in order to escape from that hell hole...they use broomsticks, two by fours, metal pieces, etc. (anything they can grab their hands on) and most balls are crumbled tin soda cans!...that is how they get so good and why a lot of players (both former and current) come from Central America and the Dominican Republic.
